I can only assume Sakurai either wanted to have subtle differences in Dr Mario's physics, like in Melee, or just felt that exchanging his fireballs for Pills was enough of a change on its own.

Dark Pit, until more information is shed to light, defies all explanation. I'm assuming his physics are different as well.
Lucina is as much an alternate costume as Dark Pit.

I'm inclined to believe this mainly because the images coincide perfectly with that most recent leak's details:

The only difference being that the text leak indicates Dixie and Ridley are also playable characters.

Editing to add: If this is true and DLC is on the way, I definitely want all previously cut veterans to be released eventually. Squirtle and Ivysaur definitely.
That leak looks so fake. I mean, why are there no names under the icons?

Those renders could've easily been fanmade, nowadays there are people more than skilled to do stuff like that, one never knows.
In the defense of the names under icons thing, most fighting games DON'T have names under character icons, only faces.

However, people are insanely talented in all corners of the internet. Someone like that with time on their hands could easily doctor this.

However however, we ARE in the final stretch, and screenshots of someone with a game box featuring a picture of the back of the game box and some other stuff.

However x 3, see However.
I don't believe in any leaks until a week before the game comes out in Japan.
Fuck leaks. 99% of the fun is in getting the game and discovering stuff yourself, what's the point in having the impact beforehand?
I can't handle any more surprises in my life, Gors. Not good for my heart.

(Also it softens the blows when characters I really want don't get in)

(Also I have no self control, please help)
Doesn't the roster image kind of disprove itself? Each of the characters in that image has a unique color displayed behind them. But from what we have already seen from the demos, the roster actually shows each of the characters in front of an animated fiery effect. While it's "possible" they could have changed it, it seems like an awful big step backwards.
In this video it seems to have the colored background layout. I think what you're thinking of is the Wii U version, which I don't think uses the color backgrounds.

HOWEVER, notice how this has the character names, while the leak does not. Food for thought.
Eh, there are a lot more characters to choose from in the leak. Maybe the names wouldn't fit for everyone
Oh I guess I thought that was supposed to be the Wii U roster for some reason. I'm tired.

I guess my next question would be why are the characters somewhat jumbled up and not entirely grouped by franchise. Yoshi is in between Bowser and Rosalina, and in previous games he's been off to the side of the Mario characters due to having his own franchise attributed to him. Dr. Mario is way down at the bottom when in Melee he was right next to Mario. Baby Bowser seems like he should be right next to Bowser. It's kind of a mess.
Maybe the Soc is down by Dark Pit and Lucina because they're clones. You know, almost no difference so they're being grouped together for some reason. Maybe the wonky placement is because there's still characters locked. I remember someone saying that the leaker said they hadn't unlocked everyone yet. Idunno
Well that argument there just pushes it further into the questionable zone. Any type of actual leak would have to come from someone within the company working on the game, meaning they would already know the entire roster. It's not like it's possible for an average Joe to steal actual carts of the game at this point, take it home and play through it. And even if that was possible, how would they know about what DLC content is coming?

That DLC content claim is extremely fishy by the way. Ignoring my argument for why I don't believe Snake is going to appear in this iteration of Smash Bros at all, given the evidence we've already seen within the game it is highly unlikely that the Ice Climbers are going to be DLC content. Every enemy we've seen for Smash Run so far is from a franchise with a confirmed fighter attributed to it; the only exception is the Polar Bear from Ice Climbers, which was one of the earliest enemies we've seen. That sure seems to suggest to me that Popo & Nana have been intended to be in the game from the beginning.

[EDIT] By the way, just a random comment: I'm really proud of everyone on this forum for not letting our conversation devolve into a huge unbearable sexism debate after this last Samus costume update ... like EVERYWHERE ELSE ON THE INTERNET. Kudos on your maturity, guys.
They could've been intended at the start, and they're just DLC because there were complications and them being DLC gives extra time for Sakurai to iron out the bugs or something. Just for arguments sake

And regarding the Samus deal, I definitely see where it'd be considered sexist and objectifying. However is Sakurai went through the trouble of dumbing down an entire game so it would be considered accessible to all and everyone would be able to play, I couldn't see the sense behind including a costume simply for sex appeal. I have no doubt that there will be a sudden rise in ZSS mains from dudebros who are overtly interested in a pair of boobs and an exposed midriff, but that's a different discussion
There were some people who believed Ridley was going to be shown since it's the one year anniversary of the Pyrosphere reveal.
