Ryu is way too much fun to play as. I'm getting my ass kicked by level nine CPUs again because he's taking a lot of getting used to, but I REALLY want to get good at him. I don't think he'll be my primary main (got the Monado Boy for that) but he'll definitely be up there with Captain Falcon.

Where are you guys getting "niche tastes" from?

Most of my complaints are from the lack of DK content and too much Fire Emblem content. What's niche about that?

Fire Emblem is way more niche than DK. So what it comes down to is blatant favoritism. Samurai clearly doesn't give two hoots about DK and loves the fuck out of Fire Emblem.
It is extremely popular in Japan.

And SSB is a Japan-made game. Of course this changes everything - after all this game has to cater (mainly) to two different demographics.

Also honestly Roy is less FE and more SSB imo
yeah, I feel like Roy is basically in the same boat as Jigglypuff now. Both characters have little to no presence in their respective franchises, but live on because they were included in Smash Bros.

EDIT: yo I didn't actually talk about my reactions to the newcomers

they're all fuckballs amazing and I love each and every one of them
Roy is the one of the CHEAPEST MOTHERFUCKER IN THE GAME. With every match I figure out more cheap strategies and combos, his grab and followups are literally the cheapest stuff in the entire game since Luigi's guaranteed down-throw nonsense, good lord.

Good luck starting at 0% against him, a BOY who knows what he's doing will definitely just-
Grab > Downthrow > Jab > Regrab > Pummel > Downthrow > Short-hop fast-fall NAir > ANYTHING Assuming you're at the ledge
Grab > Downthrow > "HYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!"
Grab > Downthrow > [Air-dodge baited] F-Smash (the most scary one).

Our boy has become a man.

i see what u did there
Ryu's way too much goddamn fun. The Shakunetsu Hadouken is just a bit too silly input-wise, however, but he's definitely a main for me. Roy, however, is just fabulous. It may be too early to accurately call this, but it's bizarre how Roy of all characters might be like the best swordsman in the game. He may very well become my top main.

That said, though, I don't wanna rely too much on those two, so I'm still also working my Yoshi, Dr. Mario, and Captain Falcon.

I feel like this is the case too. Honestly, the 'Kong series still having only two characters, and a disproportionately small amount of general content is insane.

You never know though, we might be lucky enough to get a third representative. But I think I know better than to actually expect that.
Koopaul Wrote:Most of my complaints are from the lack of DK content

Don't worry Koopaul, I do feel where you're coming from. DKC was really shafted in terms of representation this time. (it deserved another character, if not a new assist trophy)

Overall though, Smash 4 has some pretty damn good representation in terms of characters and assist trophies. Mega Man, Pac Man, motherfucking STREET FIGHTER (With Virtua Fighter and Tekken costumes) the Xeno series, Fatal Frame, Last Story... even classic Nintendo characters that haven't been used in 20-30 years showed up like Duck Hunt, Takamaru, and the Prince of Sable.

Kinda sucks F-Zero didn't get any new content besides the 3ds stage though. (And Golden Sun only got music)

Look, hopefully K Rool can still win the Smash ballot or something.

Excuse me, Jigglypuff was added in the original Smash because she was the second most popular Pokemon in Japan at the time Nerd (first is Pikachu, obvs)

(the rest are just whatever the hell Sakurai feels like I guess)

But yeah, she's been included in each following entry because of her underdog status, but at this point she's like a running joke

If Sakurai didn't give two hoots about DK, then why was he and Diddy buffed so massively to the point where Diddy was one of the best in the game until a patch came along?
(DK now has like a million meteor opportunities)

Well, considering half the series is in a weird legal tossup and the older entries are barely relevant and most of the assets now belong to a companny that now belogns to one of the world's computer software giants, it's hard to just toss in characters like K.Rool all willy-nilly. Meanwhile, Fire Emblem is a widely-recognized franchise in Japan and the success of the newer titles just mean more exposure (and thus more characters)

But Microsoft is usually cool about stuff apparently so it might not be that bad (it also seems impossible for them for some reason to interface with an American company, because Nintendo)
Nintendo owns K. Rool and all the kremlings. Why why why do I keep hearing that he isn't? K. Rool was playable in Mario Super Sluggers for heavens sakes!

He was playable in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast too! Nintendo owns everything tied to the DK name. There are no legal problems. Where are you hearing this? I need to know the source so I can crush it. Its a plague!

Oh and Diddy Kong's former top tier status was obviously an oversight considering he fixed it.
... Y'all talkin' about tiers now? lol

What have I even done
Don't think the balancing in Smash 4 is 100% focused on where it needs to be. Why wasn't Rosalina nerfed last patch? They need to take every chance they get to touch up on as much as they can with each patch because god knows when they'll do it again.

ye idk if im a scrub or what but roy and ryu just feel hilariously imba compared to the rest of the cast

like, okay: you could actually have fair battles and just strategize with some of the characters on the roster and do fine (like you can beat a good Duck Hunt, he's not that OP - he just demands overdefensive play)
But Ryu straight up out-prioritizes a ton of things, and characters like Sonic (who actually seems decent in this game, but that's just me) are just completely shut down by Ryu.

and roy...

lol
