The good news is though Nintendo is starting to finally show off really obscure game characters, and possibly trying to spark interest in them again.

Another Kid Icarus item? This is getting pathetic Sakurai.

why? cause it ain't donkey kong?

kid icarus uprising is a game stocked with mechanics, weapons and items that could very well be tranformed into smash items, same goes for zelda.

while i think this item does look interesting, i'm not a huge fan of three-piece collect items like the dragoon. seems a bit too much work for a may or may not KO

because it's sakurai's new baby

not that uprising isn't cool as hell and i don't appreciate the kid icarus love, i just understand why others are bitter
You got to be more fair when doing this. Kid Icarus is getting a ridiculous amount of content... from one new game. Are we forgetting that the series has only three games (two if you live in Japan) and was dead for 15 years?

If anything the series is no better than Mother. But we don't have a million items for Mother in Smash. I have yet to see any Mother enemies in Smash Run. Mother deserves more than it's getting.

This isn't just about Donkey Kong fandom, this is about the bigger picture. When making a game celebrating Nintendo, don't play favorites.

i was just teasing you really cause i'm a massive asshole and all
but in all seriousness i do agree, but i've seen this coming from far away since it's
pretty much just how sakurai works ever since.

while i do agree with you, and it the game(s) is/are suppose to be a nintendo celebration, it also about vision. what works and what does not work, or just doesn't feel right

and right now i think sakurai thinks a lot of kid icarus uprising works

well i'm not the one making the game you know
I feel like a lot of Kid Icarus: Uprising was designed to work. Like the game was built with crossover appeal in mind.

Easy now, Koopaul. While I agree 6 new items inspired by Kid Icarus may seem a bit much, I also think that all the new items look fun as hell. A lot of what Sakurai does translates well into his other game series. Smash plays somewhat like Kirby Superstar in terms of certain move inputs (with tweaking of course), Kirby's Air Ride elements have appeared in multiple games (Smash Run, the glass containers for achieving things in Brawl and Kid Icarus).

You also have to remember that representation of a series doesn't necessarily have much to do with a game's history, but more about what is going to translate well into this game. This is kind of sad in some cases. I'd love more Metroid representation, but most of the "items" you can get in the game are merely power-ups to Samus' suit, and while one did cross over well, everything else is kind of left in the dust. However, if you paid close attention to early Smash Run videos, the Power Bomb is making an appearance, so there's more going on than face value here right now.

I think another reason that a lot of Kid Icarus stuff showed up early is the fact some of the assets were already there. In the 3DS version at least, they might have been able to use 3D models right out of the original game. Granted, they probably would have just made a new model from scratch by the end, but at least with something to start maybe they were able to play around with the ideas and get a good idea for how these items would work.

In the end, I DON'T think that we will see many or any new items for Mother, Donkey Kong or Star Fox. The series that will always strong-arm the Items list is Mario, Zelda, Pokemon with their Pokeball variety, and Kid Icarus in a distant fourth ONLY as of now. There IS still time for stuff to be introduced.

But out of all the things you mentioned getting stiffed, you forgot the good Captain. He hasn't had a single item to his name and has been in the game since the beginning.

Your attitude is pathetic. Kid Icarus: Uprising did incredibly well sales wise and with the reviews, and much of the games items would transition perfectly over, it makes sense. And it's a series which saw a fairly recent release, while the Mother series hasn't done anything whatsoever, except make Earthbound available on the VC.
Also, the fact that they showing many of one series new items doesn't mean other series won't get new items. Save the baseless criticisms for until you actually play the game and then get disappointed about such pointlessly dumb things if it turns out that some series didn't get the supposed equal representation you think they all deserve, when they don't. Some of these series should be happy they're getting any representation at all, and I'm glad they do, but I'm not going to call out a game if they don't necessarily cover one franchise to a degree that I might have hoped they would have.

I don't even understand why anybody would be mad about Kid Icarus getting a bunch of representation, it's a great series that deserved to be revived. Also, it's not like Mother got a new character in Brawl or anything, and while Lucas may or may not come back, it's not like they've just always ignored the Mother series or other series for that matter.
I am going to put in another note. There may be a REASON why Donkey Kong isn't being shown too much before the release of the game. You can think of it as playing favorites for right now, but it might be possible that the days where we aren't getting a big reveal... We are getting things that people expect to show off or tidbits that won't spoil much.
Showing all of the Kid Icarus inclusions is something that people expect to happen, thus doesn't spoil anything before the game comes out. Now let's say that they showed King K Rool's ship as a stage. For a small update, that would spoil a massive amount more than showing off a new Kid Icarus item ever would.

On a related note, I still think it is too early to state that any series is overrepresented in these games.
Well, there's also just... how many items can you have, and how many franchises have items whose ability isn't already represented?

Looking at Donkey Kong as a franchise (and just off the top of my head):

Barrels
Metal Barrels
TNT Barrels
Rocket Barrels
Bananas
Coins
Crystal Coconuts
DK64 Instruments
DK64 Guns
Barrel Blasters (jetpacks)
Orange Grenades
Crates
Animal Buddies

There's actually a lot of neat stuff in there. But let's cut out the ones that are already represented, are ambiguously represented, or have a similar enough item from other franchises already in the game. That would rule out:

DK64 Guns (none of which would have been unique anyways)
DK64 Instruments
Bananas
Barrels
Crates
Barrel Blasters

So that leaves:

Coins
Crystal Coconuts
Metal Barrels
TNT Barrels
Rocket Barrels
Orange Grenades
Animal Buddies

What can honestly even be done with Coins and Crystal Coconuts? We already have a plethora of healing items all across the board. I suppose the Crystal Coconuts could be used to buff a character's special attacks until their next KO? The barrels, while all cool and could have very legitimate applications, would not greatly impact the thought and strategy that goes into using an item in ways that challenge how a person plays the game. They all work the same: pick up and roll. Orange Grenades would merely be weaker Bob-Ombs, and few Animal Buddies could really work well.

Kid Icarus, on the other hand, has a vast array of items with varied and unique uses, and the same is true of the Zelda and Mario franchises. There just isn't a lot of unique things to draw on from most games.

This attitude really is not any better.
Donkey Kong has four, arguably six items already revealed in the game. Kid Icarus has five. They aren't getting that much more significant attention, it merely feels that way because every Kid Icarus item is new while DK's are from previous Smash installments.
I was only using Donkey Kong to illustrate the point about duplicate item uses, really. Aha. I didn't mean to turn the topic into DK.

Edit: Honestly, we need some Yoshi items!

MS. WARP FOR SM4SH!
Moving on to a different subject, I REALLY wish Hyrule Warriors would have came out before the development of Smash 4 started now. I want to play THAT Ganondorf in Smash. Dual-wielding heavy powerful swords combined with powerful magic would definitely lend to differentiating him from the other sword-based fighters.
