The closest you can get to a SSB64 style Brawl mod is Super Smash Bros 64 Remix.
It gets rid of things like smash charging and air dodging and adds stuff like Z-Canceling. What sucks is that it doesn't remove side B-Attacks...or change the characters' attacks in general for that matter, but that's what the creator was going for apparently.

I was going to make a comment on how much I would have loved for this to happen, but then I realized that would mean Sakurai was stuck working on the same series forever, which is exactly what he was trying to get out of when he left Hal. I don't think I would wish that fate upon him.

Instead I think my preference would be for him to get out of doing both Kirby and Smash, and starting a new IP of his own. Enough of this Kid Icarus-esque reviving old franchises bullshit. Make your own original thing, bro.

My girlfriend and I were wondering about that, because even Mario Kart Arcade GP DX uses the new Pac-Man design. It's good to see that Sakurai actually fought for the classic design, and yeah - had he been forced to use the Ghostly Adventures design....

To be fair, though, I'm pretty sure that if they did go with the new design they'd give him a retexture close to his old design. It'd still suck, but not as much.

That said, however, Pac-Man going with his older design makes sense, considering that characters like Mega Man and Ryu were both based most dominantly on their most iconic retro appearances (NES Mega Man games and Street Fighter II).

Sakurai can be quite stubborn about his preffered interpretation of characters. In this case it was a good thing, and we got the better Pac-Man. But in most cases its not so good.

I mean there is no good reason for Bowser and DK to not have their voices other than Sakurai just wanted it that way.

I think the Ghostly Adventures design would have made a better alt than water wings and kitchen mitts.

Kitchen Mitts Pac Man is LIFE.

But no Ms. Pac-Man alt is still bollix.

If the article has any truth to it, though, Sakurai's decision to have Bower and DK voiced the way they are could have been vetoed. The article implies that something Sakurai wishes to do can be rejected, so if this was that big a deal to anyone else at Nintendo, it might have been changed.

Similarly I think they cheaped out with Ryu's recolors. Why not recolors based off of other characters?
