I hope the Wii U can handle 8x2 Ice Climbers, otherwise I can't see them happen. I have no hope for them for 3DS.
And as easy of a solution a solo Ice Climber may be, the duo gimmick is what made them. They're as likely to split up as Ganondorf is going to get an original moveset. I think now that we have version exclusive paid DLC, the chances for Ice Climbers to be DLC exclusive for Wii U went up, even if by a little.

I have my doubts that will happen.
Stage DLC exclusives are one thing, but correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Sakurai say that he wanted both versions to have the same roster? Unless he chooses to change his mind on it or try to figure out a way to make the ice climbers work on the 3DS, I just don't see the Ice Climbers as they were happening.
(Unless of course, he ends up making 2D sprites of the Ice Climbers in the same vein as the Flying Man, but the odds of that are extremely slim too.)
The roster without DLC is already equal on both platforms and so is every DLC fighter so far, but whatever Sakurai says is never set in stone (Pac Man, Villager).
Sure, I doubt Ice Climbers will happen and I don't really care personally since I think Duck Hunt is the superior NES rep, but I wouldn't say it's impossible just because Sakurai said so.
Personally, I believe that the Wii U's 8 Player Smash (maybe even regular Smash) had as much to do with the Ice Climbers' exclusion as the 3DS. The promises to have the game run at 60 FPS as much as possible and to have the same roster on each system is also a contribution to that.
I really do think the 8 Player Smash is a major reason. The mode already limits the number of stages because of how stressful it can be on the FPS, and they even downgrade graphical elements in stages to make it happen (Like removing Ridley and all lava from the Pyrosphere). Maybe four pairs of Ice Climbers alone had the potential to cause slowdown.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of too. I was thinking that Ice Climbers could be limited to 4-player Smash, but that would go at the cost of Classic Mode and Special Orders along with 8-player Smash for them.

I hope both my Ballot entries make it in obviously (yeah, I cheated, who hasn't): Tails (I want some hardcore Mario & Luigi on Sonic & Tails action) and Paper Mario (The first REAL flat fighter and not a flattened 3D model). Shovel Knight I'd also gladly take. I'm likely to be more than content with whatever we get from the ballot though.

Or hell, one of these indie companies could have done the same thing and PAID someone to write a script that puts in a bajillion votes for Shovel Knight

One thing's for certain: If Hitler makes top of the poll, or any character that has no videogame related origin, that character gets chucked in the bin first thing. I'm also sure that at two to five votes from the same computer, they'll consider the fact that maybe multiple family members or room/housemates cast a single vote, but a spam is easily recognized and disqualified (the vote, not the character). And I'm sure Yacht Club (for example) doesn't want to jeopardize their relationship with Nintendo.
I made my two votes on different devices by the way. The first was on my brother's PC before I had my laptop and my second on, well, my laptop. You could say my first vote was in my brother's name. I doubt he would've voted for Tails though, but he doesn't really care.
If you ask me, the most likely characters to get in from the Ballot are Shovel Knight and K. Rool.
Snake, Wolf, and Issac could probably fit as the third one. Besides I think it'll be silly to assume that Snake is totally out of the picture just yet given he was in Brawl at least.

This...is a huge argument for another day, but as nice as it is that you made sure to cover your tracks by voting from two completely different devices (spoilers: it's the same location so if they were super strict about this, they could void one of the votes) I'm sure "morals" wouldn't be the first that comes up to a person or group who REALLY wants ...say, Sukapon as a playable character and is SO passionate about this that they come up with some kind of application that permits them to do this.
I mean, 4chan managed to get Moot as one of the most influential people of the year in TIME magazine some time back - this wouldn't be too far off lmao

I still believe they could bring the Ice Climbers back if they revamped the duo mechanic so that it doesn't overload either system.
Instead of making the second IC a CPU character that mimics the inputs of the first one and can act independent of it, make it a much simpler AI that is part of the first one, that is unable to desync, and is essentially just an extended hitbox that happens to look like a separate character (sort of like Duck Hunt).
Or something.
