My assumption was that Ryu might be at E3 and Roy, if not then as well, might be connected to that Fire Emblem concert.

So what will probably happen is something completely different.
I'm hoping we get a small batch of DLC characters shown off at e3.
Characters take so long to create and balance, which results in long periods of time between character DLC. That said, I wouldn't expect too many characters to be announced at E3, we'll be lucky if we get more than one.

Personally, I wish they would offer other smaller DLCs between character offerings to keep the hype up and make the wait feel like less of a drag. More Mii costumes released on occasion would be nice, but they could also offer us Classic Stage DLCs, since those aren't nearly as time consuming to create.
Do game companies usually announce DLC for recently-released games at E3? I was under the impression they'd only show new stuff and new games.
They should release more than just a character. A new stage, or new trophies or new costumes should come bundled with a character. Paying 5 dollars for a character just kinda feels like a drag imo.

I mean, characters in Skullgirls cost 5 dollars, but they go on sale frequently for 99 cents. Can't see that happening with Smash Bros's characters.

well, yea besides the fact you're talking about a cool company that relies purely on digital sales as opposed to an old-fashioned Japanese company that's trying to establish draconic guidelines for uploading their content to video sharing sites in 2015
Devoting an entire presentation just to Lucas and a bunch of costumes?  Doesn't sound right.

I'm expecting a few surprises from Sakurai here.  They wouldn't be making such a big deal out of this announcement (so far as putting it on the official Nintendo E3 page) if he didn't have any in store.
Knowing Sakurai he expects everyone to think Roy and Ryu will be the newcomer trailer for the direct and then throws a curveball that

BLANKA

SHOCKS THE MASSES

will be in instead.
Would be nice if perhaps they showed current standings in the Smash ballot and maybe made it clear how far they are willing to take DLC characters. Both of those situations seem unlikely though.
If they showed us, we'd all have high expectations for characters high in the poll. The problem is, just because a character is high on the ballot doesn't mean they'll be considered.

I bet Shovel Knight is high up there but I doubt they'll put him in.
I want my gawt damned Squidlings not just a costume for a mii fighter :C
inb4 squid costumes are just a set up and squidlings are put in smash

Nuts to that, what they need is to make free DLC for Splatoon first where you get to play as Octarians, and THEN they need to make the Inklings Smash DLC where Octarians are an alternate 8 set of costume colors.

I really hope they make Octarian DLC in Splatoon. :<

Famous last words of everyone who doubted Mega Man or Pac Man could be in Smash.

HOWEVER, in their defense those two Mens are gaming legends, one predating Mario, and the desire to see the two of them in Smash runs so deep you can see 14th century art hinting at their eventual inclusion into Smash Bros. I'm just pointing out that if there is a strong enough voice, it can be heard, because there was certainly a time when people said these two could never be in Smash. I guess my point is "never say never".

Still, I think there's still a long way to go before Shoves Night.

correct me if im wrong, but didnt sakurai specifically mention that they are just looking for which characters are interesting, which means that the ballot is not based on popularity?
Sakurai has said a few things that turned out to be hot air... You can never really tell how much of what he says is true.
