I'd actually prefer it if Alph became his own separate character instead. Using Rock Pikmin instead of White and Purple. I'm not really as bothered by the Sm4sh clones, considering they didn't take away from any of the newcomers, and I honestly think Alph should've got the same treatment!

I actually agree. I don't like the idea of characters having COMPLETELY SEPARATE characters as costumes. It just feels... weird and inconsistent. Alph could've easily have been an Olimar semi-clone with a different playstyle and that would've been fine by me.
I prefer Lucina to marth, so the answer to that is no... and the same with Dr. Mario to Mario. And I'm talking gameplay here, not characters.

In the case of Dark Pit, I would prefer Pit just get his Brawl moves back and Dark Pit take on Pit's Sm4sh moves as custom moves. Essentially, Dark Pit would stay the same and Pit would revert.

Rock Pikmin should have definitely been a custom move for the Pikmin captains. Bulbmin as well.

Honestly, if they were to separate Alph and Olimar, I want them to do something more creative with Alph. A full-on "Koppaite Captains" character utilizing all three of the Koppaites somehow. Maybe instead of being able to jump, the Koppaites have to toss each other onto higher ledges (as a not-thought-out example). It's just that the teamwork mechanic was such a big point of Pikmin 3, both in its marketing and its adventure, and I would rather Alph was able to showcase that.

Of course, I want Louie on a Tiny Titan Dweevil first... and something with the President, even though his frame is just different...

Erm, right then! The current clones and alts I think are fine. To be honest, I wish they'd gone whole-hog with the Daisy-over-Peach skin, and maybe allowed the characters to have different taunts and victory animations to better show off their unique characteristics. I also wouldn't mind if Luigi, Wario, and Peach all got doctor (and nurse) outfits with name/taunt/victory changes and custom moves to accomodate. I'm not thinking big custom moves, but just like:

L-Pills for Luigi
Pills for Peach instead of vegetables
Pills for Wario to throw instead of driving his bike (or something. Maybe keep the bike since Dr. Wario is in Wario Ware... Pills replace bite?)

Whole Dr. Mushroom Family here.

This reminds me: in 5ma5h, one of Wario's Side Special customs needs to have his bike replaced with his muscle car from Wario Land 4.

this. however, it would make more sense if they just give dark pit pit's brawl moveset. the recovery in brawl for pit was marginally better than the one here, so it would make sense for dark pit to have the better recovery, since he can actually fly in kid icarus uprising

pit's brawl side b was also atrocious, so it'd be best to make a better side b for the brawlified dark pit.
Why is "clone" such a dirty word? Seriously, I think Dr. Mario, Lucina and Dark Pit are fine the way they are.
The differences between Dark Pit and Pit are so incredibly minimal though. He makes Lucina and Dr. Mario look like fully fleshed out original characters.
It appears that characters need to be made as their own slots if even a slight difference in their stats are present. In other words, different characters can only be alts if the changes are cosmetic. This means,

did you edit the hitbox size a little? That's a different character.
did you increase power and/or attack status effect? That's a different character.

Since the slots aren't limited technically, "clones" are relatively easy to make, but they're still man-hours in the game. Think about it as an 'extra' effort to make them different. I mean, Luigi was a clone, and look at him now

However Dark Pit is really lacking - though I know Sakurai's feel. I would hate if my character didn't have accurate presentation in my own game.
I think what I'd like even more than seeing these three clones removed is seeing them improved. The fact that they already have full character status now would make turning them into only alternates feel like a significant downgrade.

Improvements could include giving them more significant moveset differences (such as Falco's improvements made in Brawl), giving them more different Custom Specials (I'm looking at YOU Lucina), and even just making further hitbox differences in either application or power.

They obviously had no problems making alternate costumes as full new characters (See the Koopalings and Alph), but when it actually came time to do it, they had issues taking a character and NOT giving them differences. I'm sure that they would have done the same for Alph if they had the time, but the Pikmin mechanic is so complex that the only real way to make a clone of significant difference would be including the newer Pikmin, which in turn would have been a tremendously larger amount of time and thus far more work than a simple cloning tweak.
I honestly wouldn't mind if Olimar went back to his Brawl mechanics (Pikwhip recovery, six Pikmin, etc.) and they gave the new mechanics to another Captain.
The Pikmin minimization doesn't really have anything to do with altering his mechanics for the sake of altering them, though. That's due to the 3DS limits. I mean, even with the minimized number of Pikmin the Pikmin themselves drop to a dramatically low framerate just to keep the game running at what it does.

Now if there was no 3DS version for the next iteration of the series, having a Captain who pulls fewer Pikmin is really just at a disadvantage, unless he utilizes them differently or gets different Pikmin.
Oh, I thought they were cut down for balancing purposes x.x

whatever, I'm just going to fantasize about smash 5.

wasnt this also the case? i remember olimar being one of the top character back in brawl, due to all the pikmins and stuff.
I will forever be salty towards the 3DS version because it held back the Wii U version in so many ways

I woke up at like 2 AM last night and went to go check my GC which I left idling so that I could unlock Mewtwo. (I've done all of this before a looong time ago I was just an idiot and erased my save at some point) and I finally got Mewtwo again. Then I went and did all of the target tests to get G&W again. Then I went back to sleep. ' 3 '
Fine. If they can't be alts then they should just be cut in the next game. Those three characters pissed more people off than pleased. They're an eyesore to the CSS.

Well maybe not Lucina. She's a beloved character in the Fire Emblem series.

It's funny how we're totally fine with the Koopalings turning into Shadow Mario, but Dark Pit can't use the Three Sacred Treasures... Character accuracy my ass.
