I hate to say it, but I'm glad they're gone. It's a bitch to play against a good IC player
Can someone explain exactly how DLC would work in online play? How would you fight using characters that your opponent doesn't have the data for on their console? Are there other games that have made this work?

This has been a non-issue for the past decade. A mandatory update is sent out which includes data for the character as an opponent but not as a player character.
By the way, the Ice Climbers have been cut due to hardware limitations, right? Well, if the New 3DS is powerful enough to run a port of Xenoblade Chronicles and DLC is still a possibility, then maybe that'll solve that problem?

In online matchmaking, what if you get the New-3DS-exclusive Ice Climbers DLC as an opponent...and you have a launch day 3DS that can't handle all that eskimo baby mayhem?

Maybe it'll be doable if they release a revamped version of the game like Capcom does with its 5 Street Fighter yearly updates and make ~Super Smash Bros Turbo~ a N3DS exclusive?
I really cannot imagine it's impossible to have Ice Climbers on the 3DS. It's seems tricky, but not impossible. However, would you rather spend time and energy you could've spent on let's say 2 characters than to get this one right? Also, if you've read the article, it's also mentioned that series that are unlikely to have installments soon get lower priority, so their absence isn't just due to technical issues.

Though realistically speaking, the only reason Ice Climbers are desired is because they were playable before. If they were not and were added now instead of Duck Hunt, knowing Duck Hunt was considered, people'd be pissed. Duck Hunt simply has more historical value.

My thoughts on how to bring them back: Should technology hold them back, add Popo/Nana as a single character instead. We already got rid of the transformation gimmick, so why not? They have unique attacks without their gimmick anyway. (I never really like the idea of playing as 2 equal characters at the same time)

The Ice Climbers are one playable Popo and one computer-controlled Nana (with "Tails AI"). Four players at once playing Ice Climbers means that there are four playable Popos with "Nana" AIs that the game has to handle independently. On top of that, each one has to be rendered by the game's graphic processing.
It's definitely technical issues ):

The "trick" they used to make Duck Hunt work is that the duck, at no point separates himself from the dog model - they are actually rendered as one character onscreen the whole time. If you notice very, VERY closely in people's screenshots of DHD, you'll notice that the duck's feet are actually part of the dog's texture.

I'm not denying that there are technical issues neither was I comparing them to Duck Hunt technically. I just find it unlikely that it's impossible to work around them, hence my suggestion of making them individual characters instead. It's no longer unheard of for characters to share a slot like Olimar and Alph, so Popo and Nana can work similarly.

They would need a reworked moveset though if they're going to be separated. Since their tether would fail horribly without the other, I had in mind them using the pterodactyl to recover. Their neutral-B attack usually blew in both directions, so instead they could to a sort of T-stance and blow icy wind from each hand.
Want Ice Climbers to be a team? How about P1 picks Popo and P2 picks Nana. Since Team Battles no longer affects the costume color, it can work.
This is just an idea and might sound stupid. I personally don't care much for Ice Climbers. I do care about Mewtwo, goddamnit!
So apparently the "Tower of Smash" rumor lost a little ground today because there is no data of the mentioned "linked characters" it describes. There could be explanations for why that is, but it does provide a blow to its authenticity.

I"m pretty sure the Ice climber issue has nothing to do with the modeling rendering and everything to do with the AI behind the model. (Unless that fur of theirs is really intensive coding)

Duck hunt's dog and Duck would take nearly identical space for a single model as two separate models, save for a few polygons where the duck touches the dog. They are, however, likely treated as a single object by the code. Which means the CPU can just run a single check on the "character" rather than two identical checks on the duck and dog individually. In other words, Duck hunt would have worked just fine without that trick. Still saves some space so that they can stuff even MORE stuff in.
A single Ice Climber wouldn't be as charming as both. I think it's for the best that they were cut instead of reduced to a completely different concept.

And I'm sorry I'm really sad Lucas is gone but I'm also aware not that many people care. Some people are blowing this completely out of the water by saying they'd rather trade the 3DS version for one single not so popular character, which seems kinda silly

It was an idea, one for when having both is absolutely impossible. I'm going to unlock the Ice Climber hat (if there is one) and put that on my Popo Mii anyways. I also have a Toad Mii for when I get a Toad hat. I think visually, they both make nice substitutes (tested in Mii Park), though I wish I could turn the sword into a hammer.
If the hammer option was available, then this guy could easily pass himself off as Mario.

Still waiting for that Paper Mario that uses hammers.....

EDIT: ok Jesus Chris Sakurai what is the deal http://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/commen...n_smash_4/

EDIT2: apparently this can be "murabito" which is villager's Japanese name (this chant apparently only appears with him) so yeah ):
It's probably not impossible to think Sakurai and his team will figure out a work-around to include the Ice Climbers later on once the game has been out for a little while and they pretty much have forever to decide how and if they want to include DLC. I'm sure it can be done, but during the primary development schedule for the games figuring out how to get IC to work out probably would have taken too much time away from the rest of the game... that won't be an issue if they start looking at post-launch content.
