I read somewhere, on these boards even, that Sakurai is not fond of Earthbound because one of his games was delayed for Earthbound 64, which then never even happened.

Roy's popularity goes well beyond FE fans into general Nintendo fans territory. Even casual players (from my generation) can recognize Roy.
I'd say the DQ is pretty legendary in Japan, outside not so much. Even more so than Metal Gear, there are DQ arcade games, card games, restaurants, etc. But again there are probably options higher options on the list.

Tingle will be right along side Starfy in the assist group in my opinion. As for Palutena I'm thinking Medusa will get in over her, as a sort of villian/female character.

Ridley will be right along with Yellow Devil in what looks like some sort of boss challenge. I would prefer this rather than some scrunched up version.

And Megaman repping 3rd party and retro? I doubt it. Wouldn't be surprised if they take something really obscure or unexpected and make it the retro character.(like Donbe)
I really hope Palutena makes the cut. From the patterns in the rest of the characters, she may have a shot. It's usually the Main character, then the partner/sidekick, then the villain, then the love interest.

Mario (64), Luigi (64), Bowser (M), Peach (M)
Link (64), N/A, Ganondorf (M), Zelda (M)
Fox (64), Falco (M), Wolf (B), N/A
Kirby (64), Meta (B), Dedede (B), N/A
Donkey Kong (64), Diddy (B), N/A, N/A
Pit (B), N/A (Palutena?), N/A (Hades? Medusa?), N/A

Young/Toon Link isn't technically a sidekick, so I left him out of the list.
Meta and Dedede both blur the lines of sidekick/villain, so I stuck them in the closest one.
DK seems to be following the pattern so far, but there's no current solid villain right now. Dixie isn't DK's love interest, but she's the closest we've got.
Palutena blurs the line between sidekick and love interest, but...
Kriven, best be careful what you hear about Smash and decide what is fact from fiction, Sakurai was going to replace Ness with Lucas in Melee, but because of EB64s cancellation, Ness stayed.

There's a lot of false or mixed up info that always seems to pop up with whatever 'sakurai sez'
among others include him hating Jigglypuff, ice climbers and Ness, how the game will have a shorter roster, and trying to analyze all his twitter post like sakurai has a riddle complexion.

Also in regards to Tails...no, Sonic isn't a Nintendo franchise at this point in time to consider adding sidekicks, Pac-Man, Simon Belmont and Prof.Layton have bigger chances then him.

I know and alluded to this in my post.
I'd rather have a diverse roster covering different franchises rather than having a bunch of characters form the same franchises we already have represented.

When people think about newcomers, they always think, "who's gonna be the next Kid Icarus character" or "who's gonna be the next Mario character". I on the other hand try to think, "what series haven't they pulled a character from yet?"

Although I too want to see a character or two from a series that's already got a character, but it's usually a series that only has 1 or 2 characters. And it's not much.

Just three characters I'd like to see added to pre-established series.
Dixie Kong
Ridley
Samurai Goroh
(I don't count Mewtwo because I figure he'll be replacing Lucario's spot on the roster)

And then I start digging around for other things.
Villager (thanks Sakurai!)
Starfy (thanks Sakurai *sarcasm*)
Little Mac
Takamaru
Isaac

Even things that don't have a chance in hell like:
Barbara the Bat
Dillon
Somethng from Rhythm Heaven

I'd much rather see those guys than another Mario or Zelda character.
A character from rhythm heaven having all rhythm-based attacks at all time could be amazing

ly annoying
but also just amazing

I was going with what I thought was probable over what I want. If it were what I want, Smash would be updated monthly with DLC equivalent to one character and one stage, sometimes items and play modes. This would continue deep into the life of the current generation, maxing at about a hundred character roster.
I accidentally forgot Pokemon Trainer, but let's be honest: the Kanto Starters have only gotten more relevant from X/Y. I doubt he'll be removed either.
Not only that, but the Pokemon Trainer perfectly embodies what Pokemon is. Even better than Pikachu.
I'm just curious what they will do about balancing the generations. I mean, I know Sakurai will end up putting in what he feels will be fun, which I'm okay with, but I hope we get some representation from other gens this time around. Seriously, I'd like another Pokemon Trainer from a different region (I want to fight as Greninja).
Pokeballs. The Playable Pokemon cast is probably not going to change too much from what it is.
I would cream so hard if we got a Pokemon Trainer with Chespin, Braixen and Greninja.
Wishful thinking: I'd like a representative from Fossil Fighters.
As a playable character or Assist Trophy? Because you might actually have a pretty good chance of a Fossil Fighter Assist being in there.
