I think the tag-out mechanic would be the coolest way to handle that situation, unless they use OoT Zelda to represent OoT 3D.
And honestly, if they use Tetra, it should just be Tetra and not Toon Zelda/Tetra. I'd rather have the ghostly Zelda from Spirit Tracks posessing a suit of Phantom armor, but that's me.
On Mario: There's still a pretty good chance of Toad or Bowser Jr. showing up to represent the NSMB series, and for Toad that now includes 3D World. I honestly hope that the number of Mario spin-off characters (Yoshi, DK, Wario) matches or exceeds the number of Primary Mario characters, just as it had in Brawl.
Man I hope not! I really hope this is it for new Mario characters. Remember the more time he puts into Mario, the less time he puts into other series.

I just did a thing with Adamant Ditto and talked about Smash. The basics were this:
Mario: We thought Bowser Jr was the most likely with Rosalina as a wildcard because of all the love she's gotten recently.
Yoshi and Wario: Good as-is.
DK: Dixie is a pretty solid addition and (in our opinion) likely. The fact that Cranky is playable now kind of throws a monkey wrench (tee hee) into that, though.
Zelda: All the necessary characters are in. It looks like they're getting "definitive" looks instead of changing with each new main game, but that makes it easier to not have to redesign/adapt Sheik/Ganondorf/etc each game. If anything, maybe Toon Zelda, but... unlikely.
Pokemon: Pikachu and Jigglypuff are pretty much locks. Mewtwo was being considered and the consensus was that he'll be back since he's super-relevant. Trainer is a great concept and uses a lot of characters. With 5 Mario reps, we can add Lucario to make it so not everyone is a Gen 1 Pokemon.
Kirby: Has the three that it needs. Moving on...
Metroid: Samus is in the roster twice. The series is about Samus, and nobody else comes close to being as important.
Kid Icarus: Probably Palutena. If not her, Hades, Magnus, and Medusa are all "maybes" but Palutena has the best shot, imo.
Star Fox: Fox and Falco are locks. Wolf is iffy on returning. Krystal is a huge maybe, but SF series is looking good right now.
Fire Emblem: Marth and Ike will probably stick around because they're the most prominent lords. A couple names were tossed around, but I don't know the series well enough to remember them...
Earthbound: If anyone, Claus. Jeff and Porky were mentioned, but overall, the series is low on Nintendo's radar now that the big two are in.
Misc: Ice Climbers, G&W, ROB, Olimar, and Captain Falcon are all fine for their series.
New: Little Mac will be playable. Mark my words. And others, I'm sure.
Third party: If Snake returns, I'll be shocked. Kojima hasn't put a Metal Gear game on a Nintendo console in a long long time.

IMO, I think Metroid is big enough to warrant a second character (besides Zamus). The only character that could possibly occupy such a spot would be Ridley, so it's either him or no one.
And Porky would be pretty boss too.
I really don't see Kid Icarus getting two roster slots until Metroid does.
I don't think so either. My money is on Palutena.
I'd say Dark Samus. (no ridley resize, esp seeing that large boss characters will be some sort of challenge in this game too (yellow devil) )
Mewtwo for pokemon.
I'd say medusa/hades for Kid Icarus(adds a villian). Also final smashes are looking to be the same so Palutena might just be in Pit's final smash.
I want to say since Toon Link came back Wolf will too.
Maybe Chrom for FE, to get people to buy the new game.(I'd prefer the red head girl who's appeared in every FE game)
