Except some people need money, and so they do commissions and stuff. Or they have a patreon or whatever people use these days.
I'm pretty sure that most people who use art to make money are well aware just how hard it is to make a living off of it.
But yeah, as Kitsu said, sometimes people can end up being drawn in by the art style (pun completely intentional), so they can do more original works.

I'm just saying I can understand where a lot of these people are coming from. It can be tough out there in the art world. I know for sure.

...Also...
Project X Zone 2 is supposed to be out today, but it's still not available in the eShop. This happened with Pokemon Picross too. How frustrating... I would get a physical copy if I could. Unfortunately I'm stuck at my dorm and I don't trust the city enough to go out by myself.
People shouldn't be derided for creating fanart... just create what you want to. Our entertainment industry thrives on reinterpretation... What's the difference between a "sanctioned" Star Wars novel and one you find on the Internet, other than the publisher? If it's good, it's good; if it's what's in your heart, let it beat.
The problem is mostly stemming from oversaturation. It's no secret that everyone outside these fandoms are sick of seeing the same thing in masse everywhere they go. Ignoring them is made harder when they're constantly shoved in your face daily (The big 4; Sonic, FNAF, Ponies, Undertale). So, they can draw whatever they want, but that doesn't mean people will be happy about it. Especially their watchers that originally watched them because of their own ideas, but never got see them again, because they flipped the fan art switch. Completely abandoning their own creations for months, in favor of doing nonstop Mario fan art.

Actually, Mario is pretty up there too; more specifically, the Koopaling oversaturation.

If they just did fan art every once in a while, rather than all the time, there wouldn't be as much annoyance really. But if that's pretty much all they do, they're just feeding into the oversaturation, and turning many more people off in the process.

Ooh, thanks for reminding me to hound my friend on drawing my Splatoon OC

Not gonna lie, this is probably the least obnoxious thing because every Splatoon OC, in theory, can exist in game and things aren't weird and all those inklings exist for the same reason. The customization is so diverse that it actually limits creativity, and in the case of Splatoon I'm totally OK with it. With something like Sonic or FNAF, you're literally bending the lexicon to your liking and it's Irritating As Fuck

WAIT, DO THESE EXIST? JESUS, THE ONLY THING THAT I THOUGHT WAS STILL PURE IN OUR WORLD
I mean, I could easily see somebody making like, characters that resemble the Mona Lisa from the '87 series but literally turtles that just happen to mutate from similar mutagen to the turtles? Hell, even if fangirls made like other creatures (like Manda Rey, Ray Fillet's cousin who's got a thing for Michelangelo? Took me 3 seconds : 3c) I'd be --
okay Dolph I'm sure you'll agree with me here but is it me or does April in the new 2012 series feel kinda Mary Sue-ish with her abilities?

Koh I'm sorry this isn't quite related but seeing you've been talking about fandom oversaturation I just can't stop thinking about that one image

Lol, Trinity of Trash Fandoms. Or TTF for short. Who is SuperWhoLock?

Well, I've pretty much said everything that I could say on the opposition against fan art I think. Its not that there shouldn't be ANY fan art, but, as with anything that isn't done in moderation, it becomes bad.
I make Sonic fan characters all the time. I'm making the more often than anything else lately, due to the positive reception of my, let's say, content. Trust me when I say I put more effort in designing them than just slapping a pair of jeans on a green Sonic.

Making fan art helps me improve through practise. I've started to improve on anatomy, shading and, hold on to your seats, shoe design. I used to make simple boots, but now I'm more accustomed to actually designing these things. I put thought in them. If you happened to have browsed my DeviantArt, you might have come across my latest drawing of Princess (I think I put it here too). The ways in which I've improved are applied to that piece of art. My skill gained from making Sonic fan art, applied to a true original character.

This whole post boils down to "Draw what people want you to draw", which I just can't get behind. I've never been annoyed by fan content appearing in a newsfeed or whatever, even if a single franchise dominates... because it isn't worth getting upset about. It's almost selfish, really.
It seems you missed the most important line in that post.

"So, they can draw whatever they want, but that doesn't mean people will be happy about it."

If they want to do endless fanart, then they can do endless fanart. That doesn't mean they won't be feeding into the oversaturation problem, if it's something that's already all over the place and in your face everyday.

Just imagine having a little sister, who won't stop prattling on about how much she loves Dora the Explorer to you, every single day, multiple times a day. It's not a problem that she likes Dora the Explorer. The problem is she doesn't shut up about it. Now, take this concept, and apply it to getting bombarded with fanart, and other media, of the same franchise every day, multiple times a day, and you have the internet's state of being done with these fandoms. Which, by definition, is oversaturation.
That was the most important line? It read as a half-back-pedal that you could fall back on later to say "B-b-but I said they could do what they want!"

The only other meaning I can pull out of how you used that line is "They can draw what tney want, but they shouldn't."

The line doesn't exist in a vaccuum. It has the context of the rest of your post coloring it.
It's more like "They can draw what they want, and should fully understand why any problems occur."

I guarantee you fanart, and other media, of franchises that aren't as oversaturated right now don't have this problem. If you did...say, a piece to show your liking of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, as a random example, you probably wouldn't get a single problem from it. The franchise is pretty quiet, and it's not plastered on nearly every "main" webpage of the internet, and so people wouldn't think twice about its existence. However, if you do a piece for say...FNAF, since people are getting bombarded with that daily, you'll get more backlash like "Ugh, more FNAF..." and so on.
Can this conversation be transferred to maybe a "fan art discussion" thread and stop cluttering the general gaming thread?

I...Koh oh my god do you live under a rock? Very Sad I'm sorry, but I'm so shocked that you haven't heard the term "SuperWhoLock"

Supernatural, Doctor Who and Sherlock. They're the trash fandoms of like...10 years ago, or every comic book convention

hey I'll let you know that I busted my ass making my blue Tails recolor with his jeans and flannel and just one tail in high school

You don't know how hard it is to remove a single tail Bucko. I had to remove it very carefully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have I ever introduced you guys to Reflection the Hedgehog and his girlfriend Lilac the Bunny-Thing?
I once saw an actual GOOD Sonic fan character. I know, crazy. Right?

I believe he was called "Snaps" the lobster. He was a very unique character. For one he wasn't just a hedgehog recolor. His concept reminded me of a classic Genesis character. Mostly because he had a unique physical feature that reflected his gameplay.
