there's the problem
oh okay vipershark so if you type "my opinion" before the phrase it automatically means that nobody else can argue over it or agree/disagree with you. great.

also yeah gary great idea let us ban from this thread anyone that actually are fans of the series or the original games, they're all sires that can't argue and can only bitch because of sonic's new design!!! come on metaru and vipershark let's bail from this thread we are worse than star trek fans!!!!!!!!!
actually he did the right thing rokkan. sonic 4 has done nothing(yet) but show how blatalanty retarded and close minded people can be when blinded by fanatism. it does make me feel ashamed on how overly serious people can take something as simple as a game.

Then ban discussions from every fucking game ever. this will pretty much always happen to overhyped games, remember Brawl? OMG ONLY TWO THIRD-PARTY CHARACTERS??? NO (insert a stupid and barely noticeable character) IN THIS GAME??? OMG NO WAVEDASH??? I'LL NEVER BUY IT.

But I was mostly criticizing the way he generalizes and says that every Sonic fan is, well, Retro Sonic. I find it funny that the internet is making fun of the fandom for being too close-minded and just going to buy the game if it's perfect in every way, when a year ago the fandom was being made fun of because they'd buy any kind of shit that SEGA throws.
To, be honest, I still feel that the blind fandom is COMPLETELY warranted here.
I'll say it again. Sega pulled the "true sequel" card. This is supposed to be THE sonic game that will make up for everything post-SA2. It's supposed to he the 100% sequel to the original series.

Then they showed it to us.

People got pissed because of the graphics. THOSE are the "closed-minded" people you're talking about. Yeah, it would've looked infinitely better with HD sprited graphics, as long as the gameplay and polish, etc was kept intact, I'd be fine with the game.

Then leak #1 came. It appeared to be from a beta version of the game, as springs and stuff didn't appear to work. People raged for no reason at what was obviously incomplete.

Then the real leaks came.

While nobody can confirm that the game is finished yet or not (so I won't complain about the glitchy mechanics such as the minecart controls), you can definitely see that the game is in a near-complete state and it's highly unlikely that any of the levels and bosses will change.

THIS is where it's acceptable to get pissed off.
The game isn't a sequel at all. It's a bad mashup of the first two games, with the name "Sonic 4" slapped on.

I'm not even going to complain about the gameplay as it could still be totally fun (and obviously I haven't played it myself), but you have to admit that judging from those videos alone the homing attack breaks the game and makes it infinitely easy. And the levels still follow the Sonic Rush "single path" layout style rather than the multiple path style of the original games.

I feel that if Sega is intent on billing this as a part of the original series, the fans have a right to complain about how they didn't do a good job of making it like the original series.
It's post's like those that I wish there was an un-thank button.

Who asked you to get your hopes up thinking this was going to be the end all be all? You've already mentioned how you haven't played it yourself so you can't judge, so I won't bust your chops about that.

I will however bust your chops on this little idea that you and others have in your head that SEGA needs to cater to your claims/whims/wants at all. They don't. Like I keep saying the Sonic fandom is not like a woman who's staying with an abusive husband. Your all spoiled children who are promised something and just because it wasn't as great as you were initially hoping for you bitch and get nasty. The parents try as best they can and tell you Disney World cause they're trying something new, but you actually ended up at Disney Land...Europe. WHICH ISN'T BAD! But not necessarily good either.

I look at the leaks and say; "Cool, cool they're testing waters. They're rehashing SURE, but it's not like it's terrible throwback. Maybe the inspiration comes in Episode 2?" All this resignation of it being levels from Sonic 1 + 2? How is exactly is that a bad thing it doesn't look like it's missed much, there ARE other routes to tops and bottoms of levels that I can see, they're vague and playing the game myself will either prove me wrong or right on that matter, but I see it as a step in the right direction regardless.

Sigh, yes they did say if you've been waiting for this game then be glad it's come back. The formula is the same as last though. Green Zone, Water Zone, Casino Zone, Marble like Zone, Sonic has a new move, Sonic hunts down Eggman rinse and repeat. Every side-scroller installment was like that (Tweaks hear and there).

Let me understand that disappointment then, tell me why this isn't what you were wanting or expecting.

If I'm reading this correctly, you're asking me the question that I just answered.

Yes,

is how every game is. I'm not complaining about the gameplay formula at all, because as I've said, I haven't played it so there as absolutely nothing for me to judge it on. (Though just from watching the videos alone, the homing attack looks as though it breaks the game.)

What I'm complaining about is the game itself.
Sonic 4 is supposed to be a sequel. A follow-up to S3K. What happens next in the story.
This is none of that. This is a bad mashup of the first two games that tries to pass itself off as something it's not: A sequel.
Sega themselves said that this is the game we've been waiting 15 or more years for. This isn't supposed to just be a sonic game. It's supposed to be THE sonic game. The sonic game that everybody has been wanting for all this time.

It isn't.
sonic CD/Advance/Rush/Pocket Adventure/even SA2.

they're all sequels, none of the correlate to the first three, neither the first three correlate each other.

As I said, I don't consider Sonic CD to be canon. (Yes, it is canon, but there isn't really much explanation as to where it fits into the series.)

The Advance games don't really have any sort of story or continuity aside from ROBOTNIK ATTACKING BEAT HIM. They're good old platformers, which isn't a bad thing.

I've never played sonic rush adventure, so I can't comment on that series. If I recall correctly though, aren't blaze and nega-robotnik in it as well? There seems to be some sort of continuity between them.

I've never played pocket adventure, so I won't comment on that.

SA2 does have a small bit of continuity from SA1, though. The story doesn't really tell you, but it's obvious that SA2 happens after the events of SA1.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that this is all about continuity.

While yes, they're all the same series, I consider the different "spinoffs" (used very loosely to describe the different series such as rush, advance, adventure, etc) to be different universes, per se.

What this means is that all the games within a universe should follow the story of that universe.

It's obvious that Sonic 3 directly follows Sonic 2, and there is significant story to back this up. The same goes for S&K to sonic 3, even though it's technically one game. While I don't know how sonic 1 leads into sonic 2, there is an official story somewhere.

But from what I gather, Sonic 4 completely destroys the continuity built up the the past four games in the "Genesis Universe". There appears to be absolutely no reason for any of the events that are happening to happen.

See what I'm saying? This is where my problem lies. I'd be completely fine with this game if it was called ANYTHING other than Sonic 4. Yeah, the whole rehashing thing would still be sort of a dick move on sega's part, but at least the game wouldn't completely destory the series.
Call it "New Sonic the Hedgehog", solve all the world's problems?
in a nutshell, yes
for me, at least

that won't stop the hardcore fanboys from hating it though
you're a bit too much obsessed with a game's name vipershark. you are the reason people makes fun of the fandom.

Well, technically it is. You can unthank stuff you had thanked.

Anyway, Vipershark, I believe you're making a bit of unnecessary fuss. Or at least getting ahead of yourself. Chill out, pick your favorite Sonic game and wait for the next one. Being all hyped-out in forehand, specially with this kind of thought won't change a thing. You can flame it AFTER playing it. Or maybe it's good like the old games. Who can tell? I'm not even trying to guess or get my hopes (or disgust) too high before playing it
I also have no idea how it's going to fit, maybe it's a spin off. Maybe they make the Adventure/Advance/all the others being a different cannon and this one being the Genesis cannon. Maybe they are going to put it right in the end of all. Or a prequel, they love to make prequels these days.

For me? I think I'm going to get Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 for GameCube, so I can play it on my Wii. I sold my Dreamcast ages ago and I really miss playing those games. And I might get the collection for DS. And wait.
