the worst part was how there was no hint AT ALL of what to do
jumping made it go up and down, little by little

after about 10 minutes of straight jumping, I got the timing right to where it dipped juuuuuuuuust low enough so it looked like sonic could fit through...
but then I'd try to jump through AND IT WOULD GO RIGHT BACK TO WHERE IT WAS ARGH
I have no idea how many times I tried that and failed
The first few times I beat that level were with debug mode. I simply could not think of any other way to get past it.

All I know is that one day out of frustration I held down as I fell from my jump onto the cylinder and it made me go down more then normal. I didn't realize for probably around a half an hour after that that holding up would make the cylinder go up. Needless to say after finally getting past that part I raged quite a bit.
the only problem with that is that without sonic and knuckles, the sound test code was impossible to put in
to this day, I've never been able to enter the sound test code in S3 mode.
It has been so long since I played 3 that I have literally no idea what you guys are talking about right now.

:c
sonic 3 has a nearly impossible sound test code which requires you to put in up, down, up, up in the split second before the title screen.

as for the part we're talking about, it's that annoying cylinder in carnival night act 2 that everybody gets stuck at
everybody but me apparently

seriously guys it wasn't that unintuitive, I got through it at the first time I played through the level, and it was before I had access to the internet. I don't understand why almost nobody thought "hey, pressing down makes the platform go down a little bit, and pressing up does the platform go up! I wonder if I can make it go down and up enough so that I can get through!" :I
because other things made it move, also
as I said, even jumping on it made it move, and believe me, I wasted HOURS trying to jump up and down and it never worked.

besides, most of us were like... six at that time.
You know I find more people annoyed with the fact no one could get past that at 6 then I find people who couldn't do it. I didn't figure it out until half an hour later but I got it.

The point is in a game where you're supposed to be going a relatively good speed at almost all times you shouldn't run into puzzles that slow you down to a grinding halt for anywhere even near a half an hour.
how is the barrel a puzzle there are literally three buttons and four directions to choose from, and if the buttons make you jump and left and right don't work.................
Because it confuses you with other things.
As I sad, everything you do makes it move. Since jumping on it makes it move up and down, the obvious solution is to jump on it until it dips low enough for you to enter it. But as soon as you try to jump off, it shoots back to original position. Thinking that you simply didn't jump enough, you attempt it again. And again. and again.
That's what happened with me. I stopped playing the game for years until I learned what to do.

As far as I remember, no other guimmicks use up/down. I can't think of any other examples, anyway.

It's like having a Mario game and one of the ingame features responding to the Select button.

Unless your not constantly pressing down to auto-spin dash when running which is dumb cause traveling is safer that way, you'd be pressing down usually upon getting to the barrel I am still baffled as to how I didn't realize this when I was younger. It was the first thing I did then stopped doing cause I thought pressing the button over and over was the better idea.
I forgot but pressing up allows you to see above you correct?
I've never beat Sonic 3. I came to the conclusion that it is impossible to get past carnival place with tails. Am i wrong?
