I like the idea for a water starter as a crustacean, personally.
It also looks like all of the grass starters appear to be real slim (treeeko/tsutaja) or really chunky (bulbasaur/chikorita/turtwig), and all of the slim ones are on two legs. I think it should either be a four legged-chunky one again or a bipedal slim one.
Either way all the starters first fors seem to have very large heads but we'll get into design choices after we decide what animal they are going to be.

Right now NO MORE suggesting other Pokemon unless it's starter related. Let's focus on the starters.
I'm still rooting for a stegosaurus, it has the easiest to relate to grass types, what with the whole solar power. And it could become one of those finned carnivores I can't think of atm.
Really interesting project you have here, just wanted to throw my opinions out here.

As for the starters, a stegosaurus is decent, but maybe a dimetrodon(Image) into a spinosaurus(Image)? Dimetrodons actually used their sail to get sunlight, and they tend to be depicted as green. A water/bug isopod sounds amazing; maybe it could be bipedal? And I think a ram is good for fire.

This project should turn out really awesome.
It's gonna limit us a lot, but I think we should veer a little away from dinosaurs, because we already have bulbasaur and chikorita being some types of dinosaurs.
I also really like the idea of a fire ram. I can think of a design for the first two evos later

Well there was a suggestion for a frilled lizard too.
or a frog? a giant tree frog?
grass could also be a cameleon/iguana (or both)
While I liked the reverse cycle, it would probably easier just to avoid it. There have been some type advantages and disadvantages in the past that have imbalanced starter teams though, so it's not like it would be the first time. 4x damage from a type that uses Earthquake.

My opinions on the starter species:

Grass: Frilled Lizard

Fire: Ram

Water: Isopod (Even if it isn't half bug)
I still think it can be a Pterodactyl.

Frogs are amphibians bro
Also
Maybe have the reverse typings effect the secondary type? Although it would be hard to find the typings to do so

Or we could change it to another Fire/Flying, that way it's still weak against Grass' rock and strong against Water's bug typing. But that'd leave us with another Fire/Flying, and fire is the most unoriginal in terms of its secondary typing in almost every generation. Then again, a flying ram/ox thing could be fun...

Take a look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qilin

Though it isn't necessarily described as a flying creature, I think if designed well enough flying as a subtype could be believable.

So Fire is strong to Grass is strong to Water, while Flying is weak to Rock is weak to Bug, and no serious advantages/disadvantages, save for maybe Flying's immunity to Ground.
Except water would do neutral damage to the grass/rock
IIRC the only other triangles are Fire/Rock/Steel, and Fight/Flying/Rock.

I counter that by saying that Infernape can do neutral damage to Empleon, but Empoleon can still do super effective damage with water while Infernape can do super effective damage with Fighting. Torterra mixes things up even further by being immune to electric, weak to Infernape's fire, super effective with ground moves against Infernape's Fire and Empoleon's Steel, while being normal damaged by Empoleon's water and RESISTANT to Empoleon's Steel, yet 4x damaged by Ice, a common TM move type Empoleon can learn.

I guess my point is, unless you stick with Grass/Fire/Water, there's no real balance in typing alone, and they've screwed it up since the beginning with Grass/Poison and Fire/Flying, but admittedly Type effectiveness was different then SLIGHTLY. Another thing is that the example I chose of Generation 4's starters (who I liked a lot and thought had interesting typing) isn't as balanced as Fire/Flying, Grass/Rock and Water/Bug in relation to each other. However, that's just with EACH OTHER, not with every other type combo, so overall balance I'm not entirely sure of, but are we really going to get THAT far into it?

This is getting overcomplicated, but let me link to three pokemon that actually HAVE these type combinations and I'll let YOU be the judge:

Bug/Water: Surskit
Fire/Flying: Charizard
Rock/Grass: Lileep

NOTE: I JUST realized that Fire/Flying is 4x weak against Rock, but I'd say it is still okay for the reason that it'd also be 1/4th damage from Grass. Besides, are there REALLY that many incredible Rock type moves? I'm talking like 120+ damage.
