If we go with the platypus we should do something interesting with its tail
We could do a kappa even though I guess ludicolo is, but he doesn't look much like one
Or we could be dumb and do something like dolphin-garchomp
I just checked that desman thing and it has some pretty neat features. Its weird nose thing could shoot out water or something, if I looked at the picture right.

It has to be a duck, I think the only types of ducks that don't fly are "farm" ducks. anyways...
there has to be some animal thats not a fish, yet lives near/in water...also, before anyone says it, I wouldn't go with a frog, they made so many over they years...just my opinion though...
I'll bite. How is Psyduck in any way a platypus? He has "duck" right in his name. He lacks fur, the tail, the poison barb. He's a duck.
How about a mythological creature, that isn't a fish.
So far all the water starters have been based on real things, but maybe we could make an exception
psyduck is a platypus because of golduck, which has similarities to a platypus and kappa.
farfetch'd was the true duck of gen 1, just throwing that out there.

Not the starters. The starters were always these Pokemon that could follow you around side by side, my buddy type of thing. Like Dawn's Piplup and Ash's Pikachu.

These are all just suggestions
