The problem with approving instrument samples, as I have inquired in the staff Discord long before, is that people could use the samples to recreate the music found in the game.

That might sound stupid and pointless and Petie would need to weigh more in-depth on this, but that's one of the reasons we won't host those either.

Not being overly critical here but like...it kinda does sound a bit...silly of an argument? That's like saying you could use the models or sprites here to recreate the games they're from...

* Kosheh looks at fangames
hey wait a second

I'd assume that it'd be a lot harder to reverse engineer the music than it'd be to make a screenshot from a bunch of sprites you ripped. Either one serves as the same kind of learning experience I'd think - it's just that people like distributing music and record companies are rough. It's just...hosting the music files outright is just asking for legal action, but a series of synthesized horn samples used in a Mario game seems "just as offensive" as a bunch of 1UP sounds ripped from the game...
unless I'm missing something here...?
I don't remember making the argument that they could be used to reproduce the in-game tracks as that does sound a little lacking as far as reasons not to do it go.

I personally don't have an issue with the idea of accepting sound fonts but I'd prefer doing so at tSoR - I don't think it needs its own site. Dazz, if you had a specific reason not to accept them, just let me know.

Sheet music isn't happening though - it would be too hard to maintain as not many people know how to actually read it.
That's not at all the same lol, models/sounds =/= recreating the entire game, especially in comparison to someone who is music-savvy recreating a single music track.

But yes I thought Petie wasn't really fond of that and if it was okay, why didn't we do it sooner?

Personally I don't agree with it, but oh well.
Yeah I'm agreeing with Mighty. You can't recreate a game with just some sprites or models but you very much can recreate a song with the instrument samples that make it up. It's a pretty different thing.
sorry if i enter the discussion, but i'm not really sure about recreating a track with those samples.
You can get close to it, but it would sound off.
Take vocaloids, for exeample, they sound pretty mechanic compared to the human voice, even if newer versions get every time much closer.
Compare even with those siivaginner videos to the original track, it's easy to distinguish when they use samples. You can sample a song as long it doesn't contain more than 7 notes, but i see your "better safe than sorry" approach is coming from
in either cases, i'll follow what the admins decide
as for the sheet music, i'm afraid that's illegal and kinda dangerous to do, but i don't know how american laws work
bare in mind that i'm basing all my things on the italian copyright system, it could differ in your country

i...kinda just realized that seeing as you can find sheet music books being sold nearly everywhere, so those compositions, ideally are what...the whole big deal is here. The bleeps and boops of soundfonts I assume wouldn't be as bad, as...yeah, actually what I kinda got the idea from with soundfonts being a thing is all those siivagunner videos where the soundfont's used to make a rendition of the flintstones other music

The only thing I feel like is...you can't just have soundfonts and soundfonts alone if you wanted it to be "The Music Resource" because then it'd just be "The soundfonts resource" and...at that point, you might as well just append them to The Sounds Resource...

which...would make the Sounds Resource a pretty cool place if I could grab character voices and soundfonts to make some Good Music
Kosheh, to drive the point home even further here, we will never do The Music Resource. Ever. 98% of the time spent managing that site would be rejecting music and explaining why we don't accept it.
i guess i see your point. people would just straight-up upload MP3s from games that use Sofdec technology to compress their music and we'd have to explain constantly "No, upload soundfonts ONLY" and given modern trends in gaming we'd only be able to accept soundfonts from several 90's consoles, thus baffling dozens of uploaders who refuse to read disclaimers and rules

whatever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I just wanted to see if I could rework this otherwise "controversial" idea into something much more appealing, approachable, and manageable that'd have practical use in today's remix culture
Inserting my two cents here, I also don't get the argument that soundfonts shouldnt be allowed because they could in theory be used to recreate a song. That's more like arguing we shouldnt allow sprites because someone could mock up an exact replica of something that could happen in game than it is arguing they could be used to make a whole game.

Soundfonts (individual instruments that compose a song but arent arranged in a fashion to resemble any in-game musical experience) are MUCH less vital to a company's intellectual property than the images used to represent said company's characters, or hell, even the sounds normally heard during gameplay.

From time to time I've even found some wacky DYKG-level stuff when I used to rip soundfonts from games for a friend, where there's oddball samples and vocals in songs that just don't exist in the final version, i.e. Rachel's theme in Advance Wars Dual Strike had vocal samples strewn throughout, but they were removed soon after since her theme sounded so out-of-place
Maybe the NSFW indication on icons could just be the text "NSFW"? As it's the same icon as the new report feature, and it might be a bit confusing to some. Dunno.
The report icon is likely temporary but I think it gets the point across anyway as you generally wouldn't report something that was perfectly acceptable.
Since there is an actual Neo Geo section, shouldn't it make sense to move the Neo Geo games currently on the Arcade section into it?
Since users around here seem to have certain dislikes for users who make too much requests, such as myself, I would like to suggest a "No Requests for Certain Users" Feature/Thread.

Here's how it would work:

If someone has been requesting too much, his and/or her username would be added to the list.

Here is an example of what it would look like:

The following users in this list that you see are not allowed to make any sort of requests (sprite/model/texture/sound):

LooneyTunerIan (Example of a User)

You could add additional information like ways to have their names taken off the list and have their request prevlages back.

But in any case, if this suggestion doesn't get accepted, then I am ok with that.

I just wanted to share my 2 cents about this.
