you say that now, but when death keeps creepin' up on you, you're gonna want Diddy and 100 bananas.

What even is the consequence for running out of lives anymore?

"Oh no! I ran out of lives! Now I have to restart the stage! Again..."

It's an outdated system. Yeah you lose the checkpoint but it's still not that big a deal.
Let's not forget about how easy it is to grind for lives in games during this day and age. In the more recent Mario games, they would hand out 1-Up Mushrooms like candy, so it would be easy gather 99 lives with one hand tied behind your back.
While the Mario games did hand out 1up Mushrooms pretty generously, they also made the Game Over have some meaning by limiting where and how players could save their progress.

So the Game Over has a function, it's just that most games don't take advantage of it.

It's not a big deal to you, but I could see a younger kid who actually had a difficult time getting through a stage and just finally managed to get that checkpoint being VERY afraid of getting a game over. Heck, some of the more challenging levels in DKCR had me afraid of getting a game over which is turn motivated me more into actually trying.
I kind of agree lives are an outdated concept now that we can save games at any point and Game Overs are usually a slap on the wrists. Look at Rayman Legends, that didn't need lives. Other platformers should catch on.
So here's a bump. A few days ago there was a lot of new info.

-Enguarde in NOT in the game. Damn.
-You can collect "toys" from a capsule machine at Funky's Fly and Buy (toys are like trophies in Smash)
-There is a Hard Mode.
-Time Trials have an online leaderboard.
-Annoying Super Guide is gone!
-Each partner character to DK have their own distinct moves underwater. Diddy uses his Jetpack to speed around, Dixie uses her ponytail as a propeller that has more control but not as fast, Cranky smacks enemies with his cane while swimming.
What?! No Enguarde again? Damn.
Do we know if there are any other animals besides Rambi?
I saw an episode of Gamexplain that answered that question. The person they were interviewing said there will be no other animal buddies you could ride on.
That's a shame... I'd be interested in utilizing the Animal Buddies from the drum games (was that Jungle Beat?) in this kind of traditional context.
Well that's lame. That was one of the best parts of the original trilogy.
Considering how much fans demanded the animal buddies back and the inclusion of a water stage, I'm surprised that not even Enguarde is going to accompany the Kongs.
Rambi/Squawks/Squitter/Enguarde would be the perfect combo.

And maybe Ellie. idk
I always thought Rattly was pretty fun. He never did show up again after DKC2 though.

Actually, did you guys hear the audio samples that Nintendo put up on the japanese Tropical Freeze site? DK Vine linked them in a thread the other day and I half fell in love sure.
