#SmashBrosUltimate - Smash Bros for Switch.

Honestly, the Direct showed me just about everything else I needed to see. The Belmonts look hella fun, they're finally letting us save rulesets, and getting all stages from the start is fantastic. I really can't ask for much else outta this Smash game, it's really living up to its name.

This actually bums me out. One of the things that I think has hurt the franchise post-Melee is the ease with which the stages and characters are unlocked. I miss going through the Event Matches and being surprised by a stage unlock. I miss having to do 100-Man Melee and Home Run Contest to unlock shit.

Did you seriously log in three years later just to satiate your curiousity of a single weirdo's reaction to an oddball character's inclusion

Because I think half of TSR's former userbase did too

She won't. Shovel Knight has a special relationship with Nintendo Shy
Okay seriously though Nintendo has exclusive publishing rights for the physical version of Shovel Knight in Japan (along with the amiibo) so Nintendo has full reasoning to say "Let us use Shovel Knight" and Yacht Club has a significant obligation to say "Yes". Rayman Legends had a similar agreement (exclusive to Wii U) but that agreement was later broken for some reason to allow Legends to release on the Vita, plus with the sucking up that Ubisoft has been doing as of late I honestly wouldn't be surprised if you see a Ubisoft rep this time around.

Shantae doesn't seem as likely, as it seems WayForward struggles to find publishers with each game they release in the series.

tl;dr Shovel Knight's inclusion is similar to Bayonetta's in the prior Smash but on a smaller scale

Wow i didn't know Wayforward had such issues getting publishers real shame cause the Shantae series is quite good, anyway did anybody see how people are still grasping on straws cause they saw a purple and yellow chair in the direct and they think the purple chair represents Waluigi actually being playable.

Also if Earthworm Jim did get confirmed which is highly unlikely i'll go in my backyard and eat some Earthworms/or Dirt ( I doubt Sakurai even knows who he is)
What Rips am i doing next not sure?

Shenanigans aside, Not sure if anyone noticed any changes to the first post but I finally bothered to update that over the past few days since it's been calling for it even before the update this week.

I have another update planned for the first post because I've kind of skipped over updating certain things to get whatever is confirmed listed.

On another note: Can I just say that looking over the current nintendo direct footage I'm actually pretty impressed with how they finally put Ditto in the game after having it be a completely unused asset in melee over the past decade or so? How technology evolved since gamecube.

Semi-off-topic but, given how Shrek and Goku are the two most commonly "joke" requested characters for Smash...

...Anyone else think a Dreamworks/Shonen Jump crossover platform-fighter seems like a shockingly good idea? At the very least, it'd probably be pretty fun.

I'm surprised that there are 103 stages in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Just give me a fighter with all characters and figures from pop culture from both western and eastern cultures and name it after the ultimate showdown animation.

Mr. Rogers comes in to kick everyone's ass last minute with Bob Ross.

Along those lines, when I was a young'n (we're looking at... 1999 or 2000, about) my friend would tell me about these wild and crazy video games that "they" were making. He always managed to catch commercials for these elusive games (and shows) watching late-night "grown-up television" that my parents didn't let me watch. One of them was "The Ultimate Showdown," a massive crossover sequel to Super Smash Bros. which included any character that had ever appeared in a video game. Mario? Check. Sonic? Check. Tony Hawk? You bet your ass! Every character was there, and all you had to do to unlock them was enter their name in the "cheats" menu. Just spell it out correctly: R-A-T-T-A-T-A and voila, Rattata is now duking it out with the best of the best.

Unlike traditional Nintendo games, Ultimate Showdown was taking a "mature and adult" approach to these characters (which is why the commercials only played on adult channels and I couldn't see them on Nickelodeon). To cement this fact, one scene my friend liked to talk about in particular was a moment in a wrestling ring where Waluigi slams Kangaskhan onto the mat then stomps right on the mother's throat with his big stinkin' orange shoes, grinding and making Kangaskhan cough up some blood. Oh, right: the game wasn't a platform fighter in the sense that Smash Bros. is... the kind of gameplay my friend came up with back in the day actually reminds me a lot of Marvel Nemesis, now that I think about it. Multi-directional movement in varied arena-type environments.

He always swore it was "Coming out soon" but the game never materialized. Poor little me, spent the better part of three or four years eagerly awaiting the day that Ultimate Showdown would grace my Nintendo 64.

Just going to do a quick run down of things and a share of some research I've been doing on the game and sort of a recap of things. I also have been thinking about something regarding some of it so I'm just going to do what I can to keep this at a minimum.

So some interesting news:
-Sakurai confirms K. Rool was one of the more popular characters on the ballot, influencing his decision to include him in Smash. Which ultimately confirms the rumor that the ballot has influenced Ultimate to some extent. That of which we do not know just yet, but only time will tell.
-Another thing that he noted that I thought was interesting was how he mentions K. Rool's stature needs to be tall and massive according to these tweets.
-Squad Strike: Play with one other person, or nine other people. Basically you have either three or five fighters going up against each other. Whoever loses all their characters first, loses.
-Auto Bracketing is a thing in smash, so there can be more of a variation in tournaments now.
-Smash Down = Elimination mode, but the twist is that regardless of whoever wins or loses, the characters used in a prior match will no longer be able to be selected. Strategy is knowing what you're opponent is good at and knowing when to use characters that he's good with, but those with a versatile skillset with multiple characters have better chances.
-Training Mode now has a unique stage that gives you the ability to look at the launch distance of each attack and factoring in the weight of the character. Effectively, actually making it far more useful than how training mode has been handled in the past.
-Classic mode is no longer a fucking chess board, but one downside is that it seems the random factor has been taken out once again in favor of specific movesets.
-Smash Meters make Final Smashes chargeable. Sakurai did not say himself that it would be excluded from competitive mode explicitly, however he did mention that it was better suited for casual play. Waiting to hear a bit more information before I set this in stone personally.

Same deal applies as it does the first post, correct me if my info sounds off, but info will be updated in the first post tonight. The rest I'll deal with tomorrow because it's late, and I'd rather get to bed as soon as possible.

But before I go, some other things of interest and related smash stuff:

I'm definitely excited for Smashdown. It gets me thinking about making it into a drafting game, with hate drafting and all the meta based on the group, so I've actually put together a deck of cards to do the drafting with.

Squad Strike is sounding less and less like what I really wanted though, which is a single fight with each stock being a different fighter, and instead just, well, a draft but limited, I guess? I dunno, I guess we need to see actual footage of it.

Squad Strike not really that much different from a specific style of play that I've seen in some local tournaments or clubs.

Pratt's gaming club did this with Smash 4 with another college some time ago where couple of players are on a team, have a specific character to play during a stock round, if one guy loses for their team they're done for the match.

The only difference between this and that is that there seems to be a lack of stocks in favor of using different characters, but I'm wondering if this can be set up in the rules so you can still have a set number of stocks and still keep the game going without having to change characters. Only time will tell.

Also how come is it that Sakurai keeps fucking up classic now?

Like, I love the fact that he took away the god awful chess game classic mode that should have been it's own thing but I don't want specific characters to face off against like it's supposed to be mortal kombat. I just want that random factor back.

I wonder if there are too many character/stage combinations for a totally randomized system to work at this point. I don't know enough about programming to do more than speculate.
