No characters involved. Except potentially being plucked out of the deck by Master Hand, mayhaps?

About the card maker thing, the trophy base was an original idea from Super Smash Bros. Using something from A. Another Game B. A SONIC game, at that- is a bad idea. I don't think we should use this exactly from the game, but how about using the same principle as a Catch Card from Super Paper Mario? Say that, in the game, you get a 'Hobby Bag', something to collect trophies, stickers, and Smash Cards. You can click on the Hobby Bag to open it in-game*. You can see all the Smash Cards, and stickers you've obtained in the area you're in. (This menu should be brought up as if your were looking into the bag, and shown as if you were in the bag.) In the Hobby Bag, there should be a side pocket for Smash Card holders. The Smash Cards don't drop in quantity if you leave the area, they stay until used. You can purchase Smash Card Holders from Imakuni . You start out with a free Smash Card Holder with 3 slots. Then a five slot Holder for 100 coins.** Then a 10 slot Holder for 250 coins, and finally a 20 slot Holder for 500 coins.** Anyway, when you click on your Holder, you can view all the empty Smash Cards. If you click on one, it gets taken out of the Holder and into the Player Hand. (Y'know, the little pointer used in almost every menu? And another thing, is there any way to change the cursor to that? An animated hand cursor like from Brawl?) From there, a transparent screen comes up and says "Choose an Enemy!". From there, click on an enemy on screen. The Hand will throw the Card at the enemy. If the conditions to turn it into a Card are met, it will hit the enemy and trigger a little jingle. After that, the Card will sit in the air, glowing. Pick it up ASAP, though, because it's timer for being on screen runs out, just like items. If the conditions are not met, the Card will miss, and the Hand will do that 'DAMN IT' pose Master hand does when he misses an attack. Y'know, the one where he shakes his fist tightly for a second and goes back to normal? That. In that case, the card is wasted.
*Only in Story, Adventure, or Boss Battle Modes.
**There should be a 999 coin limit, IMO.
P.S: I believe that the 'Hobby' Concept should replace the 'Vault' Menu. I think it should change into the 'Hobby Room' and you can talk to Hint Guy, where he tells you hints on how to unlock things (These include Chars, Limited Edition Cards((My idea of unlockable cards)), and Costume hints.) They then get added to your hint list he gives you to write his hints down on. The Hobby Room also has an area to talk to Imakuni, to buy (and possibly sell) cards to him. He sells them in packs. And the Casino, well, I'm not sure. A slot mechanism, yes please, but I'm not sure where. Of course, it could very well be a generic, Ssb casino. But still. And The (I didn't play Animal Crossing, but this would be the name of Mable & Able's store.). Here, you would buy Costumes. And obviously, you'd have your gallery and stage builder.

There you go! That's like a throw back to the 64 game. You know when they showed Master Hand pull the dolls from his chest. This'll be Master Hand's card game.

Sorry for the Bump, but I was just thinking.... if you're going to do seperate cards for the character's "classic" appearance, maybe you could use a sprite from the old style you guys were working on? You know what I mean? The character's "classic" card will contain a picture of their "classic" sprite?
So like... two cards for each character. You gettin' me, or am I making little sense? I did go through the topic, but it's possible I missed something important that you all wrote, seeing as I did just basically skim through.
Yay or nay?

Well, I have some ideas for the cards layout:
I liked the idea of having golden, silver and bronze colors for the cards, depending if it's rare or not. In addition, we can use another types for the very rare cards (the ones that you have to unlock instead of collect). Ruby, Saphire and Emerald (or Jade) can be these new ones (remember me the RGB system =P), one of each for the playabe characters card, its alt customm and its FS. Here is a edit that I've done:
I though that we were needing another BG pattern, so I've tried my own, a mix of brawl's and meele's style.
What do you think?

I really like the shine you put on the front of the cards.
Random idea: We could make the cards appear "3d", or "holographic" when you look at it, by placing the sprites into a 3d layer.
made a quick example

Love the 3-D rotating effect.
In the end though, I think that there should be options to zoom in and out, view the card normally, and then go into rotate mode.

There could be buttons underneath each card, saying 'zoom in' 'zoom out' 'rotate 90* clockwise' 'rotate 90* anti-clockwise' etc
Really loving the 3D card you did runouw!
Wow, that's a cool effect. We'd need to have the ability to flip it over and read the info though.

How about when you click on it it flips around, and it has more information on that character on the back (eg moveset, games appeared on etc)

But to make it less glitchy, I think that the flip option should only be enabled when the card is in its static state.
Also @Raid, those card edits look amazing. I hope I'm not alone when I say those backgrounds should get used for the final design.

I messed around with it a bit more.
We could make rare cards appear shiny as well.
What if we make some cards have animations? (like the ones in real life that change the image depending on the angle you view it at)
