Daxar's Sprite Rips

(12-23-2016, 03:58 PM)Daxar Wrote: Still trying to figure out if the image format for some of these is correct. For example, Twitch and Vinegar are aliased images and look pretty terrible when zoomed in, while Vagabond is fully antialiased and looks quite fine (aside from the lossy DXT compression, which is expected). The image formats are set on a per-frame basis, and as far as I know the format identification process is all correct unless it's changed drastically since DuckTales. Ingame it doesn't look this bad, so I'm not sure if it's a filter that's applied at runtime, if the textures are downscaled slightly to get rid of the aliasing, or if I'm just misreading the format. I think I'll keep uploading what I have, and we can always go back later and revise if our understanding of the format improves in the future.
I think that's actually just how they are, looking at the sprites in-game. It's especially noticeable when anti-aliasing is turned off:

Anyway, good work so far! ...and don't mind me adjusting the names a bit on the site. Tongue

Ok, good to know. I only ran it with AA on, so there was a noticeable difference.

Rename all you want! I only played through the game once, so I don't know the official names of everything. I'm mostly going off of what limited knowledge I have + what the characters are called in the data files, which is often quite different from what they're called ingame (e.g. "rival_genie" vs "Holly Lingerbean").

Now to see how hard these 3D models/textures formats are to extract... I suck at 3D

Hey uh, not to be a pain but, what about the backer-exclusive items like the Classic Risky, Blue Shantae, Tinkerbat Transformation, etc? Not to mention the playable Risky. Are they just not in the files yet?

I didn't see them while looking through the files. There WAS a lot of unused pixel art in various sheets, and I believe Risky had a few, but I don't think it was a whole character's worth.

The "UI" sheet (I think it was) had a few character select portraits for Shantae alternate costume and playable Risky, but I think that was about it.

The 3D objects are coming along nicely, though:

I'd be quite interested in seeing some of the unused art, did you keep it?
Tsunami Bomb - The Simple Truth
We could run away
Leave behind anything paper
Not knowing where we're going to stay
When there's no Mondays

You're part of me, it's so easy to see the simple truth
When I'm in your arms, I feel safe from harm and sorrow too
You're part of me, it's so easy to see the simple truth
But most of all, nothing couldn't be solved when I'm with you

I'm not at my main computer right now so I can't check, but as far as I remember the unused sprites were either just old art assets left over from Pirate's Curse, or ended up in the sheets themselves. There were quite a few pixel art ones left over from Pirate's Curse in general. Everything major I found (that wasn't just a duplicate of sheets in Pirate's Curse already) ended up in a sheet, though.

There was definitely a lot more unused/leftover assets than usual in this game, which made it quite interesting.

Oh wow, the models are actually FULL models? I assumed they would only be partial due to the fact that you never see the other side of them in-game. Even the Tinkerbrain is always facing the screen in the battles against it. I assume Giga Mermaid is a full model too then? Orr at least two parts, her top and tail. I'll be amazed if she actually was a full model.

Technically it is a model, yes, but it's a "2D" one:

And here I thought her body was missing in the archive. Still, that's freaking amazing to learn that, and how they pulled the effect off.
I could see the same technique be used in films with cartoons interacting with the real world, ala Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Oh that's pretty cool! Makes me wonder about the Tinkerbrain then...

Tinkerbrain is a normal 3D model. Here's a quick dump of a partial model (textures may be slightly wrong): http://i.imgur.com/TPMfSyZ.png
The only other boss I can think of that uses a flattened 3D model like Giga Mermaid has is Tinkerslug.

@RTB: Is that from a OpenGL/DirectX dump, or pulled from the .wf3d file itself? I'm working on a wf3d extractor at the moment; if we have one already I'd rather not reinvent the wheel. Tongue

It's just from a quick MaxScript experiment that I did just out of curiosity's sake, I didn't have any intentions on finishing it, especially after seeing your progress. Tongue

Oh, what about Wilbur? Is he a full model or a 2-D one like Giga-Mermaid?
