english dubs have been horrible as far as i recall.

as a whole.

Ironically if it wasn't for the terrible dubs no one would have known about Sailor Moon (or any other anime series for that matter) at all.

Unless we were talking about any nintendo game adaptions.

Japanese dubbing doesn't really sound like the way any japanese people I've heard actually talk in normal conversations. I could be totally wrong on this, but I'd be willing to bet that to at least SOME japanese people their voice acting sounds just as silly to them as ours does to us. Cartoons just have silly sounding voices.

But don't get me wrong, early dubbing (at least for english dubs of animes) was COMICALLY bad. Especially where they throw in tons of swears in a film where, while swearing was surely prevalent, it wasn't exactly merited in EVERY scene.

Isn't that the opposite of what early english dubs did?

Maybe wrong here because I don't quite understand where you are getting at in this part.

Well, not dubs of mainstream stuff like Dragonball Z or Sailor Moon, more like movies or stuff nobody ever heard of or stuff that wasn't groomed for TV. Admittedly most of this kind of stuff was so violent that the constant swearing wouldn't really bother the intended audience, but it just came off as silly rather than badass.

I think English dubs get a lot of unfair criticism as a whole. Most are quite bad, but there is a rather good reason for that. It comes down to money. On the whole, anime studios earn a much higher proportion of their profits from inside Japan (partially due to the fact that anime is a lot more expensive there), and thus they are less likely to spend large amounts of money hiring very good voice actors when they can get okay or plainly bad ones for much cheaper. However, there are a few productions where this is not the case. Gainax, for example, tend not to use sub-par voices for English dubs, and hire voice actors such as Yuri Lowental (known for Prince of Persia). Ghibli, too, usually has exceptionally good voice actors (such as Mark Hamill, and if you don't know what he's famous for, go and die in a fire). That's my theory, in any case.

Hey guys, I'm just getting interested in watching some anime, but it's a jungle out there trying to figure out what to watch.

Main question: what is a good place to start for someone who has never watched anime?

so this was announced awhile ago and it comes out in Japan in a few days and there is a actually a pretty good chance of a state-side release because the name was registered and stuff and can I have a PS3

not sure if this would go here but it has to do with a manga and I am too lazy to make a new topic

This is will be the best game ever, but it's very expensive, even in Japan, woah. It's like all those Hatsune Miku games. I heard that the Japanese version will have english menu and subtitles, but I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere. I was planning on buying it now, unless they confirm that the American release (if there will ever be one) will have options for the original voices (I don't really hate the dubs, I liked it in Unlimited Adventure, but, I like the original voices better).

Also, I wish there were at least something from the time skip in the game, oh well Sad
