GAMER LOUNGE 20XX (NO CASUALS!!)
something i was talking about with a friend earlier.

One of these game companies is lacking in ethics. not like Konami, but still not ethical enough. i know we live in a dog-eat-dog society, but to be denied of expressing your appreciation towards something you like is really inane.

I was lucky to download AM2R and Pokemon Uranium before what happened. And yet, Nintendo ignores all those Mario fan games.
There's a bit of hypocrisy about all this, as they did say they were fine with fan-made stuff before.
And all we get for Metroid's 30th anniversary is a spinoff game people are very rabid about. The chibi art style is really off-putting as well.

Seriously, Nintendo needs to listen to fans about what they want. It's no wonder people are pissed off with them lately.
I also fear Splatoon will fall into the same fate as F-Zero and Metroid. That game is a real breath of fresh air away from Mario & Friends.

Although it's sad, I think the creator of the remake was very mature about the situation. This was posted on the game blog:

"Please, don't hate Nintendo for all of this. It's their legal obligation to protect their IP.
Instead of sending hate mail, get the original M2 from the eShop. Show them that 2D adventure platformers are still a thing people want. "

Monetization and marketing. Fairly normal.

Strategy very hazardous. Preschool's marketing managers. But Nintendo never intended to target fans, not profitable enough and ask for too many things (Nintendo think). Add "Super" or "Mario" to the title and it run... then the second-hand market explode.

it's almost as if Nintendo's legal team lived by the rules of chivalry and bushido.

Nintendo is fine with fangames. AM2R is a remake, which is a no-no. They're still selling Metroid 2 on the eshop, you know. Also, the Pokemon Uranium team freaked out over AM2R and pulled their game themselves. Nintendo didn't do anything.

They're still the bad guy here, as they could've easily done what Sega did, by turning it into either a digital and/or retail game to buy.
Sonic Mania, in a way, is pretty much Taxman's cancelled Retro Sonic fangame turned into an official game.
And we don't want eight years of hard work and talent go to waste because of something like this.

Konami on the other hand is doing worse with Metal Gear Survival, because it's another generic multiplayer zombie hunting game.
Yeah, they have no clue with what to do with the franchise anymore. Now that Kojima's gone independent and making Death Stranding.
We could be seeing another great series getting killed with this pile of disappointment. It's happened before.

bottom line, nintendo needs to chill. if you feel threatened by people expressing themselves by paying tribute to your work, then you're gonna struggle in the modern world.

part of me thinks that the lawyers are acting out of their own selfishness by making fans feel bad. or who the hell knows if they're real lawyers or fake? the internet's a dangerous place.

The marketing has no place for humans.

You guys are forgetting something important about copyright law: They have to show effort of protecting their IP, or else they risk losing it. It sucks, but when you make fangames, you know what you're getting into before you even start developing. This is why it's better to make homage games than fan games, because then, you can still put your ideas out in some form, without having to worry about it.

Oh, I agree that Nintendo should definitely chill. I can't support their YouTube policy, for one.

There actually is a troll posing as an ex-Nintendo employee that reports fangames and such stored on hosting sites, getting them taken down by the sites themselves, but he wasn't the culprit for these two games.

Homage games aren't a good idea either:

This game was pulled off shelves for plagiarism back in 1987. It's also why the later Giana Sisters games got rid of the Mario elements.
