Not to discourage you from making an attempt at it, but I think someone else has already started making an engine for the game.

And so far he's doing a great job. He seems pretty capable.
No rush, man. We're nowhere near ready to start any hard stuff for the game, so tinker away at your leisure.
That game already has a better engine that's closer to the original game than any fangame before it. In all honesty, I think that your platform engines are commercial level or better. They really are amazing.
