What's Your Favorite Retro Game?
#16
I'm picky, so I have to break it down by system.

Arcade -- Galaga
NES -- Super Mario Bros. 3
SNES -- Donkey Kong Country
GBC -- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Genesis -- Sonic the Hedgehog 2

And if the N64 is considered retro, then I'd have to say Super Mario 64 for that system.

If so, Dragon Warrior Monsters. Was the best Mons game of its time; and one of the few extended series where the sequels haven't bested their predecessors.

Heart
Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Cobi's Journey. It's one of the greatest games i've ever played, I haven't played the original though.

Hai, there's this game? Kinda made fighting games a revolution everywhere?

Super Street Fighter 2/Turbo?

Good-day gents there's this game? Perhaps made RPG remakes a past time? Loved by many for it's nostalgia? Final Fantasy.

Yo, what's good dawgs? Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the shit, Sonic 1 was shit compared to it then 2 looked like donkey feces when Sonic Team outdid themselves for the last time, it's called Sonic the Hedgehog 3 later that tri-mester Sonic and Knuckles happened and you found out how the fucking Sonic Death Egg Saga ENDED peace. Cool

Heh, sorry wanted to pretend to be 3 different people.

I kinda change my mind for my favorite "retro" game, so instead I shall let it be Sonic2(SGG). This game really had caught my attention with its unique style of gameplay for some levels that you never really see in a old school Sonic game.

Quote:Super Metroid was boring and slow
you literally have no idea how to play the game lol

if you are going slow while playing this game, and are complaining about it (meaning you don't like that and want to go fast) than you are playing the game wrong

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxIWAK7nxuw
as this video (namely around 20 seconds and 5:17-5:25) should show there is an astounding potential for speed in this game if you know what you're doing

the only thing "slow" about it are room transitions and the "you got an item" thing

but this is a 100% speed run (and that video is basically just partway through the game collecting a bunch of items) so that's a lot more frequent than it would normally be in game
Right, because I'm definitely going to be doing a 100% speed run.
You and me both know that speed boosting isn't what I meant by slow.

I found Zero Mission to be an amazing game, but by comparison, Super Metroid seems mediocre at best.
Also if you replace "Majora's Mask" with "Ocarina of Time" in Tyvon's post, it would be correct.
Yes, I just went there. This now an OOT vs MM topic.

For console, definitely either SMB3 or Super Mario World, especially when three to five players alternated out, and I had to earn enough lives to keep everyone else alive in SMW (which actually isn't all that hard).

As for arcade games, probably either Super Pac-Man or Dig-Dug.

Wow boy way to completely miss the point, i'm not saying you're doing a 100% speed run (even i don't do that) i'm saying there is an obvious and astounding potential for speed if you actually even consideringworking with what the game gives you

Zero mission is pretty eh, it's way too linear and it holds your hand way too much. also too short/not enough content.

I honestly don't see how you could think super metroid is slow at all, unless you're simply playing the game wrong

which i'm guessing you are

If you work with what you're given, even without speed running, you can still get through it in a pretty comfortable and speedy pace, the "slowness" that I can only imagine you're trying to allude to just comes from playing the game badly.
hint: the game isn't nearly as linear as zero mission.

Personally speaking Super Metroid was a tier setting game at it's time it'd had no equal, I know: I've watched videos of people play. I've watched my dad play, watched, friends play, everyone says it and feels it. Your alone, and this game is deep in it's setting where you feel in your gut that shit is going to get real. When people didn't know what to do or where to go, and got pointed in directions by me it only elevated their amazement. I believe the common phrase consistently is like Castlevania 2Unsureimons Quest "How the fuck was I suppose to guess that?!"

Gizmonic is saying Vipes is that this shit did what a 2D game should NOT be able to do. The plot was underlying without narration you had to guess what was going on and the vagueness added to the sickening feeling that..."things aren't over..." The mechanics of jumping, there is no tutorial; wildlife literally shows you what your capable of. The GBA games do not give you the depth that sinking feeling in your soul that you need to rethink your stategy on how to do something. Which in hindsight is pretty disappointing for a remake of the original and the final chapter of what we know of our famous bounty hunter. Fusion doesn't sell the idea that your running from the Sa-X the game just tells you your surrounded and it locks you off from sections of the game instead of finding out the hard way: DON'T GO THAT WAY.

Giz in a sense though Vipe sis right in terms of getting to the thrill of the game you gotta climb up steep hills.

I'm gonna agree with you there about how Fusion held your hand way too much and literally told you every move to make.

However, I found Zero Mission to have just enough to warrant it being there (as in, the chozo statues showed you the map coordinates you needed to go to, but not how to get there or what to do).

Also Giz, I'm not playing the game wrong. It just feels... sluggish to me.

here let me go ahead and quote a post that's pretty much my exact thoughts with less swearing

Quote:Majora's Mask was a strange, dark twist of the Zelda series that portrayed death and sadness extremely well. The attention to detail was incredible, and all of the small minor things such relationships among the townsfolk, the Carnival of Time and how it creates a web of interelated chain of events, and how your actions affected the outcome of daily people's lives. Every single NPU was bursting with their own spectrum of personality and unique backstory that made them rather memorable.

The gameplay was amazing, especially with the innovative mask elements opening up an entire new direction for the franchise. Being able to turn into a Deku Scrub, Goron and Zora gave you unique abilities and controls that all helped the brilliant dungeon designs intensify. The three day system was also pretty neat, since you had to save Termania from the moon crashing into the planet from the evil power of the Skull Kid. Manipulating time with songs and using the Song of Time to save was also cool as well.

The graphics are slightly upgraded from OoT, and suggest a bizzare and crazy world with strange house designs and vibrant colored environments. The animation is also slightly smoother too. I love the game's soundtrack, especially the Song of Healing. Every theme gave me cold shivers due to how good the music was.

Also 52 hidden heart pieces, various upgrades and intensified difficulty made me complete the game 100%. It's that good.

Majora's Mask is considered to be the better game over Ocarina of Time, and I whole-heartily agree after completing both several times.

also the spider houses

the fucking spider houses
