Will opening a save state just open it, or save over one of mine?

Just open it. And the rip is fine =D It has to be accepted. But u didn't need to add the rotated frames, next time you could just say "rotate this" and that's all. That would save you some time.

And the savestates, desmume doesn't recognise them. They don't show up as openable files.

I got them to work, but they always freeze up after a few mins. Sad

You could try changing the settings to lower performances so it doesn't waste as much?

No, but you can visit the whole toad town, it has a lot of NPCs. well, only Toads, but there are many kinds.
