applecuckoo's Soundbites
#1
Hello all, I've joined the Sounds Resource to try my hand at ripping sounds. I'm starting with Family Game Night 4 by EA and I've already organised all the files into a big folder organised by the main Voices/Sounds categories. I've kept a couple of short jingles in the final folder. The longest one is about 16 seconds. I've already screenshotted the game and added it to TSR for approval, though I'm not sure if it's okay to just upload the one organised .zip file and not have to split it up into different games etc. Thanks!

EDIT for December 12, 2023: Just editing the initial post to say that I have sent the soundpack for review [Image: biggrin.png]
Now all I need to do is wait...

applecuckoo - ripper of sounds, sprites and models

Places to get help:
DYKG/VG Resource Discord - This is where most of the ripping experts on the VG Resource hang out these days, so you should probably start here. Any requests to rip stuff (i.e. "Please rip sounds/models/sprites from game X!") are only allowed here as per the rules.

ResHax forum - Another forum that is home to most of the reverse engineers who were on the old ZenHax and XenTax forums. A great place to get help for any mysterious files.

And remember, always upload example files. That way, people don't have to dig in and fetch them for you.

Finally managed to pop something else in the queue. I'm putting vgmstream's recently added CBX support to good use by adding the grunts and soundbites of the 'main' characters from the Wii U version of the LEGO Movie Videogame by Traveller's Tales. All except Emmet who already has his voice clips ripped from the PC version of the game.

Probably gonna finish up the LMV soundbites this weekend, but I've also managed to rip all the sounds from Spore Hero which was one of my fave games as a kid! More details coming out soon, but at the moment all you need to know is that vgmstream is the only tool required besides a copy of Spore Hero itself.

Yeah, sometimes ripping is quite crazy... I've posted all the LMV voices now, but I might as well do a quick Spore Hero write up. The game's sounds are either stored in .abk + .ast format or .mus + .mpf format. I managed to figure out the exact header order that the game expects, and that was through simple trial and error by playing with a .txtm file. There are three data files named ovl_010.mus, ovl_020.mus and strm_music.mus respectively, so I made a .txtm with the .mpf as the main file and made a guess that ovl_010 would be the first file, then ovl_020, then strm_music. Turns out I got the last two switched around, but that was an easy fix and so I cracked sound extraction from the game!

It was at that point that I learnt that Spore Hero keeps music in pre-sliced chunks, which meant I needed to comb through a bunch of music files. Needless to say I'm not uploading those to tSoR, but you can't really rip just the sounds without the music. The .txtm file is as follows:
Code:
sporebio.mpf: ovl_010.mus,strm_music.mus,ovl_020.mus

So uh, yeah, that's it. Ripping will be on and off, especially since Spore Hero is a long-term thing due to having to pre-make folders, sort through dupes, etc.

For whatever reason, I'm starting yet another ripping project even more niche than Spore Hero: the LeapPad Ultra. The model I have is the XDi, but some quick searching seems to imply that the only difference is that the XDi is higher res? Anyways, I'm organising the sounds right now for the two games I have - the My Little Pony game and the Transformers: Rescue Bots game. I've already found some odd stuff in the Rescue Bots game - there seem to be some placeholders left over that have the voice of Microsoft Bob, also some of Cody's voice lines seem to be voiced by some Mickey Mouse impersonator or something.

Anyways, the first rips for the MLP game are going up now!
