Annoyingly bad games
#46
Crow form? You mean the Omega Metroid right? Dude, that's really more of a show boss (like Mother Brian's final form in Super Metroid) than something that is meant to be hard.

It's just meant to be cool and make you feel awesome. Seriously, what the hell?

First off, oops. sorry bout the Chozo Artifacts being corrected to chocolate. Gotta love that phone auto correct...

As for the mention by Kriven about Another Metroid 2 Remake. Honestly, maybe I just really wanted a Metroid game after being deprived for so long, but I would put it up as being on par with an actually Nintendo produced game. I think it was a fantastic remake making a very old and dated game, fast, beautiful, moody, and fun, oh my god was AM2R fun.

It has hands down the tightest and most enjoyable controls I've seen in a Metroid game. Everything about movement feels so comfortable and effortless. The combat is snappy and has satisfying animations, sounds, effects, etc. The decision to pull out the camera far more than previous 2D Metroid games was also an excellent decision. I feel the character ratio on the screen is far more appropriate for a Metroid game with Samus always feeling somewhat tiny compared to the gigantic alien world the game wants you to see, as well as making it so you can more easily maneuver around your enemies.

The sprite art while being similar to Zero Metroid, has tons of modern sprinkles all throughout that elevate the visuals to new heights. The environments are also very beautifully designed and varied. The remastered soundtrack also adds wonderfully to this. Its far more atmospheric and catchy then Metroid II ever was. At the same time, it has a far more light hearted and exploratory vibe to it compared to most Metroid games.

The game also makes excellent use of the new Log Book as a replacement for the somewhat tedious scan function from the Prime games. The new Log Book is now lightning fast, simple to read, and contains tons of fantastic insights into the world. Some of which help to actually tie Metroid II into some of the later games in the series. The log book isn't the only bit of streamlining. Many great aditions like ledge vaulting, a dedicated morph ball button, new morph bomb charging functions so the morph ball can actually be a viable combat tactic, the quickest and easiest to use save points in the series so far, and I'm sure there are more I forgot to mention.

It truly is a wonderfully produced work by a dedicated fan of the franchise that I think everyone should play regardless of  what Nintendo thinks. I personally followed the game for about 6 or 7 years and it was most definitely worth the wait.

Sorry if this went on too long. We should probably get back to actually talking about (bad) games soon...

Unpopular opinion but I always found Sonic to be really unintuitive. It's probably not bad but the game itself doesn't teach you its radically different take on platforming as well as, say, Donkey Kong Country or Yoshi's Island.

I think the 'how to play' Sonic stuff kind of came with all the hype and adverts at the time - obviously something that has been lost now.

Though, well... you run and jump on stuff... so... yeah... I mean, it isn't really a Dark Souls 'you must die a lot and we will tell you nothing' kind of learning curve...

Unless you're talking about anything past Sonic and Knuckles because... I have no idea about such games.

Now that that's out of the way, I have to say that I've really never liked... err... *gulp* Mario. *Holds up flame shield*

I've played so many Mario games, but it feels like they all have the same problems: bland, clunky generic gameplay with slippery controls, primitive and unimaginative bossfights that lack satisfaction of beating, level design that's somewhat forgettable and confusing, music that annoys me greatly, among other things. But, also going out on a limb, I hate that disdaining Mario is like a grave, mortal sin, like someone cannot say they don't like Mario without being flamed or accused of bias or having a bunch of people come in and defend the game to make the person's opinion feel worthless and alone. I mean I know people love these games and they're not bad, but every time I try one I'm faced with great disappointment. ...Please don't hate me. Sad

too late, i've already gauged that you've made the worst post ever. this post made me age 10 years just reading

okay seriously though, and i'm not sure if i'm supposed to be defending games in this topic, but what bad controls are you even talking about in Mario games? I've always noticed they're super tight and Mario is hecka responsive - maybe the only exceptions being... the original tower-climbing Donkey Kong? and Super Mario Bros. 2. I've experienced far worse controls in like, the first Crash Bandicoot or Spyro games (both series have improved things considerably by the third iteration, though) so I'm like
kinda stumped here.

I dislike most RPGs btw, it's completely what I don't expect in a game, ever. I prefer playing action titles because of this

Also, mario being unresponsive to control is the same as sonic being slow as fuck. It makes no sense

I don't think I ever said the controls were unresponsive, just that they were clunky/slippery, and that's just in my opinion. You also don't see me telling Skelton that he's wrong to hate Skyrim, cause he's not. Yeah, it is a buggy game, but I like its depth, and it's gameplay isn't anything fancy but it works. Or even when Rhyme blasted League of Legends, or when Goemar blasted Sonic. All three are games I personally love and I don't see why they'd fit in a topic called "Annoyingly Bad Games" but that is their opinion, and they are entitled to it. And while I could hardly say Mario belongs here either, I don't see how I can't be entitled to my opinion as well. And, in all seriousness, I've noticed slippery physics even in the most recent Mario games, but again, that's just me and what I've noticed. Some people's experiences can definitely be different, but it doesn't make them wrong to state the experience they have had with a game. Again, they're not bad games, but my experience with them has not been as positive as most, and that whether you call the controlls slipper and clunky or super-tight is still just an opinion.

Never played the first Crash game, but I agree to an extent on Spyro that the controls aren't that great.

NSMB was basically the death of Mario for me. Like SMB 1-3 were amazing for the time, and still great. SMW was a nice little step and some polish and then Yoshi's Island was fantastic.

Super Mario 64 was great, Sunshine was a massive disappointment and I find the Galaxy games ok in short burst but I have to make an effort to go play them, they don't draw me back for whatever reason.

But well, the modern 2D games are all kind of ass... Specially compared the likes of Rahman Origins which just massively eclipses them in every way.

(Wait when did I blast Sonic?)

sunshine and galaxy are really beautiful aesthetically but game-wise they're rather meh.

i do go back to Gor's sunshine NES remake video cuz it's just so cool Big Grin. sunshine would have been a great 2d platformer for the NES imo!

clunky and slippery is a type of lack of responsiveness, you don't want too much windup frames for each new action queued in the pressed buttons.

there's nothing wrong in not liking a certain game but when you say clunky controls, I imagine something like old Castlevania style controls. (keep in mind that the clunkiness in this case is tailored to the type of game so it feels nice) And that's something no Mario is like, so that's very confusing to me

Also Sunshine was a fun game, but to each their own I guess

Slippery doesn't always mean unresponsive, it can also mean "Character slides all over the place," which most agree that SMB through SM64 DEFINITELY were, though people say they fixed it in the later games, but to be honest I still notice this in even the newer Mario games. Clunky can also refer to slow, plodding gameplay, which IMO all Mario games I've played have had.

...That being said, I still kind of want Super Mario Maker 3DS, mostly cause I like the building aspect of it.
