also i hope you realize your statement here sounds kinda silly. it reads like "feminists think it's easier to complain to developers than it is to actually develop a game and when they do it's not really that great to ME, a GAMER who NEEDS his TWITCH REFLEXES satisfied and his BRAINS tested!!!"
you might as well just stop beating around the bush and say that the only place women belong in games are locked away in a castle waiting to be saved, because that's how your statements are coming off

Like most industries, they are pretty male heavy. I don't think it's really a feminist thing to want female characters to be more 'real' - ok sure, many Japanese games and 1 on 1 fighters still have highly sexualised female characters BUT other games have got a lot better.

I mean look at Lara Croft - massive stupid tits to a rather realistic built woman. This isn't a 'feminist ruining games' thing - this is game designers being more mature. And the game benefits.

Honestly I cannot be arsed to talk about Zoe Quinn ever again, that conversation has been beaten to death.

Of course, you can still have 'sexualised' female characters who are strong - such as in the Shantae series.

And we can still have super manly characters like in Gears of War.

Character design needs to be respectful. Not particularly to any society set standards - but to the game.

I've always believed that character design of this nature is more about 'not being stupid' rather than 'feminist' etc.

Having characters be sexualized isnt the problem, it's the MASSIVE imbalance in what female and male roles are in gaming (hardly any characters are female, the ones that are are often essentially props for male characters/cheap fanservice, and even fewer games have female protagonists). These reflect onto society's ideals for women, which is reflected in media, and the cycle continues until it's intentionally broken. If there were just as many fleshed out female characters as there are male (or for that matter just as many sexualized males as there were females) no one would have a problem with an occasional sexualized female, but there's not, and so the fact that "sexualized female" is one of the only real archetypes female characters fit into is a problem.

lemme just say

people who need a character of their own gender to identify to are face to face with their own problem, and no one else's
this goes for both women complaining about not enough female protagonists, and yourself complaining about not enough male characters

if you need a character to be tailored after your real self to be able to identify with said character, well then it's not the artist's/game developer's job to suit you - it's your job to become more open-minded in experiencing art, otherwise you're closing yourself off to (about)half of the works out there

Again, of course it's cool. and nice to play as a man or a robot or whatever else you want to, that's okay - again, the whole meaning of playing a game is to play.

This means you can sympathize with any well written character out there, regardless of who you are.

Though when you're born into a minority group and are shit on by everybody in a daily basis, being represented as a capable and equal to others in-game is a shout-out and also a way the devs have to increase awareness about your situation. It even sounds little compared to the whole slew of problems we've got out there, but a small step is a step nonetheless.

This is all subjective stuff as you said, and seems trivial for us, but when your character is always assigned to passive roles and/or fanservice, it's no wonder it gets so stale after a while

So, bringing back Overwatch in question, you probably could make all characters be white males, because there are white male individuals in all countries in the whole world. But that's visually boring, considering that the world contains so diverse cultures and ethnicities.

Investing some time creating interesting characters, both personality and appearance-wise , if done right, can enhance your game, so why not?

(Psst, the only real answers to this are either 1. You don't want to spend the effort neccessary to confront your internalized thoughts on minorities or 2. You actively don't want to depict minorities [either at all or as equals]. That's p much it.)

Why aren't there any DLC gorillas yet. There's only one gorilla in this game. That's pretty disturbing.

I actually want another gorilla, one of the evil ones that live on the moon.

Maybe something more melee oriented than Winston. I thought one with a flamethrower would be cool, but that basically feels the same unless the rest of his kit is also different enough to justify it.

I think they'd have to be careful if they did another Gorilla. The silhouette could be difficult assuming this other gorilla takes a similar stance, and Winston's ult is already "primal rage".

This is true, which is why I would also have loved something like an orangutan that rides around in a Dr Wily style capsule, or a chimpanzee that runs around on legs like the spider mastermind in Doom, but as far as I know I think the lore is that they are literally just intelligent evil gorillas and no other apes. :/

Another character I'd love to see is the Six Gun Killer from various posters and sprays in the game. That guy looks badass.

Yeah, more omnics in general would be cool. Maybe we'll get an "evil" omnic at some point.

This is the most hilarious conspiracy theory I've ever read in my entire life

...which on that last one kinda reminds me, if you want a really good "feminist" game, you should check out Life is Strange and then get back to us. It's not a "feminist" game per se, but feminism is definitely a main theme of the game. maybe if you used Life is Strange as an example instead of Depression Quest, you might've had a solid point, Neon Streak
