Games?

It isn't a required thing, but it makes it easier to care about what's going on, when you can relate to who you're playing as and the other characters they interact with. Below that would be a quirky or humorous cast, like Puyo Puyo or something, where there's really not a whole lot of depth to the characters, but the silly antics in the stories get you curious on what happens next. Below that still would be games that barely go into the characters at all, and so interest entirely falls on how appealing the gameplay is.

If you're into a good, fun, and competitive puzzle game series, try all the Puyo Puyo games, lol. Tsu (2) is the standard, and Fever starts the Sega acquisition phase.

I still highly disagree

I cared what was going on in my music games before I looked for the story. I care about what's going on in cooking mama, I care what going on in Your Don't Know Jack. It's actually fairly easy to care what's going on in them too, then you dig deeper for more interesting shit and you care even more and become a fan

I mean IIDX and Pop'n are both arcade games, another arcade game I live playing and care about the characters and story of the stages in Super Table Flip. That game is fantastic as well tbh

For reals, sometimes the best things don't come easy ;3

I've played many 2D fighters in my day (which is also nowadays, lol), and I can admit that I generally don't know much about characters/story unless I get fully drawn into a game to a point where I play it all the time. My first time playing a KOF game was after getting KOF R-2 for Christmas - I honestly thought it was a game where a bunch of weird-looking kids fight in a tournament. Same with puzzle games: when I first played Super Puzzle Fighter II X, I had no idea what Capcom was and didn't have a grasp on what a fighting game was (I was probably like eight or nine at the time). Regardless, played the hell out of it. As long as I could hit people with fireballs or stack gems and break them in large quantities, I was happy.

I'm sorry if I'm derailing, but color me absolutely fucking impressed as I have so many questions here, the first being "Why did you have a NeoGeo Pocket Color of all handhelds" and secondly "Where on earth did you even buy the games"

The others basically are similar but go more into how old you were at the time etc. y'know, more personal details etc. because like

I'm pretty sure out of all of us on the Resource, you're like, one of two people who own a Neogeo Pocket Color. I'm CONSIDERING getting one but there's a big keyword here: CONSIDERING. I don't even have it yet lmao, it's not in my possession and I um, also have to actually find one first.

I dunno, to be honest. Well, my family was never hip with new technology until very recently, so I grew up with video games in a way that probably only 0.00000001% of the earth's population did as well.

I got a NGPC from "Santa" for Xmas 2004 along with one of those bootleg packs of game cartridges. 2004 being the year I was nine years old and diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and social anxiety - for a couple years, my NGPC was basically my prescription drug (though I have been actually treated, lol). If I ever found myself having a spaz attack, I'd just lay down somewhere in the house and play it.

I had it for about three years, then lost it in the middle of moving overseas (UK to America). I definitely had some fun times with it, especially because I had grown up with 8-bit games unlike 99.9999% of other people of my generation who had SNES, N64, Genesis, Xbox, etc.

Would I recommend it for this day in age? Maybe. I guess if you enjoy playing games alone, which I do all the time.

In the way of RPGs, I can recommend:

Epic Battle Fantasy series. (I advise just starting at three, though, because one and two aren't exactly fun when you die. Also, four is extremely resource-heavy)
Enchanted Cave 2.
Hack, Slash, Crawl
Questopia
Arcuz: Beyond the Dark (known on Kongregate as "Arcuz(full version)")

All of these are for pc, all of them are web games (but I think all can be run offline)
They all can be found on Kongregate, and they all are flash-based.

Bastion also comes to mind if you haven't played that.
Dungeon Siege 1 and Elder Scrolls Morrowind should rightfully work on any machine that's come out in the last 7 years.
A good place to look for older RPGS is gog. They distribute and make games compatible with modern formats. That's how I'm able to play Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds on a Windows 7 computer.

If you're interested in MMO's, one that I'd recommend is GetAmped 2 - a pretty fun, kinda buggy beat 'em up/versus fighter with more than enough customizability. Another one would probably be Dungeon Fighter Online, since it includes a lot of sprites and assuming you are into sprites being part of a spriting community you might like it o3o.

Other things for MMOs.
World of Warcraft is still pretty alive despite what people say. Its got some pretty low numbers, but that's more a product of the current expansion's garrison system which secludes people. Just go for the largest pop servers, and you'll find people.
I've been messing with Guild Wars 2 a bit recently. It is beautiful and pretty streamlined. The crafting system is all kinds of stupidly complicated, but the combat is fun and its free up until you reach expansion content if my understanding of the matter is correct.
