Holding the up direction briefly causes Kirby to raise his sword and charge it. Once charged you can move around freely, and the next time you use an attack you will fire a sword beam.

Kirby Fighters is definitely unbalanced. I've played it quite a bit and some abilities definitely have huge advantages over others. Some abilities are way overpowered simply due to how quickly they can rack up damage, while others have huge advantages on specific stages. Bomb, for example, isn't the greatest ability most of the time, but a high-level AI can completely dominate the Lololo stage with bomb. (Seriously, if you are trying to win a Very Hard campaign, pray you don't get that ability/stage match-up).

The Archer ability is completely outclassed by all other abilities. Sure, you can pin a lower-level AI enemy in a corner for an easy win, but you'll have a rough time with smarter opponents and human players. It seems almost pointless for this ability to be available in this mode, HOWEVER a four-player match where everyone is using the Archer ability can be a LOT of fun.

By the way, the "training" mode available in Kirby Fighters is actually more of a four-player Free-For-All match with rules you can set up yourself a-la Smash Bros (by pressing the Y button after selecting your ability). I think some people might not be trying it out because it's labeled as "training" making it sound unnecessary if you already know how to play the game. My only complaints are that you can't change everyone's maximum amount of health to make battles longer, and you cannot change what items appear; only how frequently they appear.
