Mother 3's story is overrated.

It's not perfect, but it's clever and it's fun. If I you take out the RPG tropes that the series makes fun of (the seven mystical ____ in this game, for example) you're still left with transvestites who give you magic powers, a monkey who delivers tvs, the ultimate chimera, and, the most interesting and clever thing in the game imo, Porky's fate. It'd be easy to kill the bad guy and have him repent before death, but having him lock himself away forever and be so gleeful yet helpless about it is a brilliant twist.

Clever spins on an old story is what makes Mother 3 shine.

I don't think this story is bad at all, but I do feel it's overrated too. It's great for what it is, but I've seen better, notably Lufia II and Terranigma.

The whole concept of the Egg that hold everyone's memories of old is incredibly stupid. It's supposed to prevent people from doing what they did to the world before but... If people don't remember the mistakes they have done in the past then they are very likely to do it again! We learn from our history and know not to make the same mistakes.

Not to mention this utopia created years ago on the dragon while everyone STILL had their memories. They were doing the right thing even when they had all their old memories. Why did they need to replace all their memories then?

On top of that the whole anticonsumerism moral and living without technology seemed hypocritical seeing how this was being told on a video game. That like a TV show telling you TV is bad. The whole humanity dooming itself with TV seems ham fisted. What's really strange is that the original Mother games seem to celebrate United States culture and lifestyle while this game seems to demonize it. What happened to the creator of this series to make him have such a change of heart?

What do you guys think?

Quote:The story isn't bad. I never said that. The title of the topic is the story is overrated. People gush over how Mother 3's story is the greatest thing in the history of mankind. It bugs me because I know the story is far from perfect, yet everyone thinks it is.
i dont know. you've got some jellybeans, and there are some locked doors in front of you; a while ago, you saw this dude eat a jellybean and then open a door that when you tried to open it, it was locked, but he got in just fine; must be the jellybeans, right?

you chow down on these jellybeans, and then try to open the door, because that was the thing that let him do it, so the same must be true for you as well, right?

you know that it's the jellybeans, and its buggin the shit out of you that no one else sees it like that.

what do you think happens

I don't think you understand what anti-consumerisim is.

it doesn't mean you are against creativity and entertainment.

like seriously by that logic no media should ever allowed to have an environmental or anti-consumerist message. because its hypocritical

because obviously if you are against consumer mentalities in means you are against television and videgames and having fun

also the happy box things were explicitly stated not to represent TV or anything in particular

The only thing I didn't like in Mother 3 was how difficult the bosses were and Chapter 6. Chapter 6 was too short, WAY too short.
