puggsoy's Puggsy sprites

Had a go at ripping something else:

[Image: puggsy-font.png]

This was pretty fun, just ripped the letters from level names and the numbers from the score. Q and X were a bit more difficult as I could only find them in the credits which had a yellowish colour (the 1st alternative palette), so I had to apply the orange palette to them. Still, taught me how to handle palettes which handy as, and I found 2 new tabs in GIMP Tongue

If someone could still tell me what Yawackhary was talking about, that'd be cool. I don't see what's wrong with the palette, I just ripped the images straight from AnimGet screenshots (or in the case of these fonts, using PrtScn).

Is there no exclamation point, question mark, or period?

I KNEW I was forgetting something!

They rarely turn up, but they're probably in the credits. I'll try and rip them tomorrow, then update the sheet. Thanks!

Oh I didn't know that you already know about the SRAM thing. Anyway about the palettes:

I don't know much about Megasis since I never used it but most Mega Drive/Genesis emulators have a different palette than what is really shown. Gens KMod uses a different colour depth so it displays completely different values than what the emulator is outputting (in the past I had to change the depth to 256 colours when screenshotting to get a consistant palette, still not correct but the values aren't different by colour like one colour having 65 and another having 64). It was only until fairly recently that someone actually did research the palette and turned out that most emulators got it wrong and so far the only emulators that have the correct palette is the later versions of Gens/GS (and GenesisPlusGX on the Wii).

However instead of reripping from scratch, you can just use these values in your paint program (except MSPaint since it doesn't show the values at all) to correct the palette:

32 = 34
64 = 68
96 = 102
128 = 136
160 = 170
192 = 204
224 = 238

That's in normal mode, for shadow and highlight mode it starts of at 17 and goes up to 255. There is no value 8 like what Megasis uses, I don't know how to correct on there. Also I'm not really good at explaining so some of this might sound confusing to you.

Someone here explains it better than I ever could on why: http://www.spriters-resource.com/communi...#pid363376

Wow that is confusing. I don't even know what those numbers mean, even after reading that post.

However, right now I have some other business to attend to. After I've ripped the rest of the font sprites, I will look into this. I do have Gens KMod but I really prefer Megasis, so it will possibly take longer than it would otherwise.

Still, thanks!

Updated the Font sheet. I haven't corrected the palette yet (it's proving near impossible to find any information on the topic), but I added the period, exclamation mark, and equals sign, there's no question mark. I also added the palette of the credits which I missed out last time, I thought it was the same as the options menu palette (brown-yellowish one in the middle).

I'm thinking: there's also an arrow which looks like it's part of the font (uses the same palettes), but it's only shown in the options menu and in-game (pointing to the exit). Therefore, since it isn't actually used in sentences or any kind of text, should it still be included in the Font sheet, or not? I'm planning to make a Miscellaneous Sprites sheet later on that has heaps of randomly used sprites, so I would put it in there if not in the Font sheet.

Yeah, the arrow should go with the misc. sprites, as arrows aren't normally used as alphabetical characters. Tongue

Also, I've upload the two enemy sheets. I'll upload the font when you update the palette.

Wait... the palette of my enemy sprites were fine? I thought Yawackhary said those were off too? If they are, maybe you should take them back off again Blank

I'm seriously having problems with this palette thing though. I can't find anything through Google, I even posted a thread and nobody's replied.

Well I figure the sheets can be updated. If anyone thinks they should be removed, then they can go ahead.

OK, so I today I went and downloaded the latest Gens release, which according to Yawackhary was the only emu that showed the Mega Drive's true palettes. I compared a screenshot of it with my sprites and saw that the palettes are indeed quite off. I still couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do to correct this, so I went off on a search to find out if there is any way in hell I could disable layers in Gens.
Well, I found something called Gens/GS. It's basically a version of Gens some guys made that adds heaps of extra features. Kinda like GensKMod, I think. Anyway, it had layer disabling via a plugin. I was distressed to find out that the original Gens doesn't support plugins (why, I have no idea), but I downloaded Gens/GS and checked it out. It worked pretty sweetly, and the layer disabling opened in a small window that stays on top, which is convenient. I compared a screenshot, but still saw that the palette was off. That was a real bummer.

However, soon after I discovered the Graphics -> Color Adjust... menu. In Gens, all you could do was make it grayscale, inverted, and change the brightness and contrast (which I didn't even think of fiddling with), but in Gens/GS there was also a "Color Scale" option. This was a dropdown box, which was by default set to "Full with S/H" (the other two options being "Full" and "Raw"). I had no idea what this meant, but I set it to "Raw" and checked it out. Still, the palettes weren't the same. But when I set it to "Full"...

[Image: huge.2.10766.JPG]

The same! Well, I'll be honest with you. In GIMP, the color chooser gave me ever-so-slightly different results. But these were super-duper tiny, and zoomed in at a billion percent the two pixels looked exactly the same. I figured that this is about as close as I was ever gonna get, and I'm sure that nobody will see any difference. Ever.

So there you go. I will delete Megasis, and over the next few days I shall be reripping my sprites. Mighty Jetters, I'll say when the Beach and Cove Enemies have been updated so that you can reupload them, and when Fonts is done you can do that too. Then I'll get on with some more enemies and probably bosses too.

These are the kinds of days I live for Cool

Got these in a mere 2 days. Gens/GS is way better than Megasis.

The only noticeable difference is that they're a bit lighter, but hopefully the correct palettes will be valuable to someone. I've also updated the OP with these.

I'll get to work on the font over the next day or two, so that I can finally get it on the Resource. I've been thinking of creating an actual font out of it, too.
