Edits are better than recolors, at any rate. There HAVE been some excellent edits in sprite history.

We're not talking about producing things

We're talking about the best way to improve

And this person obviously needs to improve before they can think about really producing things, so we're trying to tell them that there are better ways of doing so. And besides that, if you're capable of making "excellent edits" why wouldn't you just make customs? The only place I see for edits are for showing alternate costumes/power ups/armors/forms, but this person should focus on improvement. That's not to say improvement can't be fun or that you can't try edits to get a feeling for a style (though some styles really aren't great for learning the basics at all), but there's no point of posting them here. To me, edits are more quick practice and most of your time should be spent trying to get past that and go further. A newcomer's customs are bound to be super wonky, but it's better to make all those mistakes and learn how to fix them than stay comfortable changing only a few pixels around poorly.
