Games you like that everyone hates
#46
Theres nothing really i can think of for this thread that fits. maybe if it was "things you like that no one else cares about," then that would be like my whole life right there

Sonic '06 was glitchy as hell, but as other people said, I like it for some reason ('cept for Sonic/Elisa ugghhhh)
FF13 has a great soundtrack, I like the characters, and graphics don't make the game but oh my godddd
alot of Sonic games people don't like actually
Kingdom Hearts Series has an awkward story line but I like the story for some reason
LEGO Harry Potter because I'm a huge Potterhead

melee actually bothered to be a game that people on multiple levels of skill can enjoy. a game with depth, a game that wasnt bloated, a game that could be engineered to be enjoyed based upon what the players were looking for; brawl is bloated and it lacks the kind of depth melee had and the way its mechanics are handled are actually counter-productive to the idea of having a game with depth. the random tripping, for example; as far as i know, it cant be turned off. it serves no purpose other than to introduce external obfuscations
etc.

you're free to enjoy brawl more, but melee is still a better-built game. sakurai himself has pretty much acknowledged that, although not quite in those terms

pretty much, people need to start seeing that preference and quality are legitimately different things

I think you are confusing "depth" with "complexity" which aren't the same thing. Brawl was designed to be simpler on purpose to allow less experienced players a chance. That's not a poor design choice.

I don't even know what the hell "bloat" is supposed to mean in that context.

They both have the same quality in my eye is just that one is easier to pick up and one offers more complexity.

you misunderstand. both games are easy to pick up and play for the inexperienced. the difference is that melee also has a meta-game that exists beyond just that: the game can be played by both the inexperienced and the experienced, the expert, looking for something deeper, and both can leave incredibly satisfied. brawl doesnt have that, and by all means the way its mechanics are treated it actually pushes against having that (most notably, as mentioned before, the tripping). which is not hard to believe if you've read sakurai's comments on brawl and melee and how he approaches game design and the smash brothers series.

melee's "complexity" isn't just complexity because it at no point must be utilized: it exists purely for those who choose to seek it out, who seek to play the game beyond just its superficial levels.

Meta-game hm? This guy has a very interesting outlook on the whole Brawl VS Melee debate. Here's the section on Meta-game and hidden depth in the games.

This guy has a whole series on the debate. Either way, a game designed differently does not always mean it is designed worse.

I really like Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines.
NOBODY IS SURPRISED.

I mean, apart from the fact a lot of people will hate it off the bat because it's V:tM (and who can blame them, really? All of the cool ideas in WoD are ruined by all the goth fetish shit in the sourcebooks), it's buggy as shit, you're pretty much forced to use melee combat rather than being able to use guns, and it feels tremendously unfinished. I had a lot of fun with it, though. It's got a lot of cool ideas even if it's pretty hammy (best/worst quest: the snuff porn ring that turns out to be a clan of vampires who do weird horrible body modification with magic, scared the fuck out of me). There's a lot of interesting and long quests that interlock, and a lot of the dialogue is very well written. Ultimately where it shines, apart from a few areas feeling unnecessary, is in the depth of the world and the interactions with characters. If you can forgive parts feeling rushed and can stomach goth shenanigans, it's a pretty solid RPG.

I might just have my judgment coloured because I still have kind of a soft spot for ridiculous goth wank. x:
Also a lot of the soundtrack is really cool.

I really enjoyed the DS Zelda games, which I've noticed a lot of people hate. The stylus controls actually worked pretty well, even though it got uncomfortable if you played for too long, and I loved the atmosphere and dungeon design

I really liked them too
except going back up that phantom temple or whatever it was after each dungeon was not fun.

linking to a guy that has an, at best, juvenile understanding of game design while refusing to actually comment yourself hardly constitutes a meaningful statement.

Legend of Dragoon; some Final Fantasy fans say it's a FF6 and/or FF7 copy. Which is dumb within itself because all games, novels, movies, etc are cliched and got their plot/characterization ideas from older forms of media.

As I like to tell people, "It not what the story is, it's how you tell it!"

I really liked PHG despite the controls, and I think it'd be cool if rthey rebooted the Wind Waker series for the 3ds making use of the analog stick now.
