Atari Style Sonic Sprites
#16
something useful =/= submitting if you don't know yet.

When you post a pixelart here, it needs to have a degree of usefulness, be it others using it or you improving your skills. A bunch of oversized rectangles certainly doesn't show your maximum at spriting and thus we can't give concise C+C.

Post something more elaborate, and then we'll talk about it.

Nope. I noticed it too. I was certain that was a problem but I didn't want to say until I realised I wasn't just seeing things and it does look weird.

It's not just half pixels on shadow... just take a look at both the hedgehog's spike quills, they're half a pixel distant off from the body (which yes, does look like a number 1 to me, lol) and also the half pixels in the jump.

Now I'm not an expert on the ol' 2600's sprite color limitations, but I think it's too many colors on a single sprite anyway. (if the right colors at all... you may wanna look at the Atari's color pallet here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vid...e_palettes ) Also the sprite is like at 4X. I think it's okay to upscale to 4X because some of us are blind anyway, as long as you also show the original next to it... when in doubt, just keep it native. As said, splitting a pixel just looks odd.

Just keep at it, it's a good start. Cute

Do not hide behind the excuse that, "It's an Atari sprite, so it's not the best". Make an actually detailed sprite of sonic and shadow and then post. This should be locked in my opinion.

Ignoring brandaman's hypocresy, he has a very valid point here.

I'm going to go ahead and disagree here.

I mean sure, it is an excuse to say that it's bad because it's atari but come on, the guy did it for fun at least. There isn't anything wrong with that. plus he admits that it wouldn't get into TSR.

I don't think the thread should be locked because of this alone, at least give him a chance and see if Smash-aholic can at least listen to advice.

I'm not sure whether or not this has been suggested before, But far as my suggestion, maybe Atari styled sprites aren't that good for a start in spriting because of the massive restrictions. Maybe do something from NES or SNES might be a better idea. Maybe if you get better you can go back to Atari sprites.

If you want to continue with this however, maybe look up other atari games and look at those sprites, Like pitfall. Most Atari based games stick to at least black, white, and other two colors. that's far as I can say about colors.

did it took you 3 months to answer this?

actually nevermind. guess someone can go and actually check said beta and tell us what it is about. although i expect it to be anything but an atari game.

You walk and you pick up 3 rings in this 800 pixels wide room (your character is about 100 pixels wide) (relative to my 1024x768 res.).
You can jump, but you never have to.
When you reach the edge, the guy has a spaz.

i can tell you the novelty of this is on the same level of Halo 2600.

you do proved you could emulate the gameplay of a platformer with a blue character, but thats probably where the novelty wears off. simply because achieving the extremely simple mechanics of sonic on an equally simple system as the atari 2600 doesnt really take much planning. in fact i can see the game being nothing but a extremely similar clone to pitfall, with posibly a boss at the end of the stage and thats all.

however, we're not here to discourage you on completing this. after all i'm p sure this was just made for the sake of porting sonic to the atari 2600(given that you can use the genesis controllers on said system, it kinda makes a nice picture).

honestly it doesn't scream "atari" to me. you might want a palette and a list of atari 2600 restrictions.

you might want to gather a little inspiration from this

don't steal them obviously, but these still fit 2600 limits yet look much better

apparently 2600 homebrew is quite easy to make
i was looking into it a while ago but i hate the system's graphical limitations

either way guys it's still a beta.im still working on it right now fixing glitches and coding so moving to the edge takes you to the next area like in pit fall. And I'm not making a homebrew,im using some other program that can make it into a stand alone exe not a rom.i have no idea what so ever how to code on bataribasc, visualbb,or any other atari making program.

So you want to make an Atari game, but you choose not to learn how to use programs/languages that make decent Atari games?
