It's funny how games with influence of Japanese folklore were so underground back then. I'm hoping that now with something as popular as Yokai Watch, and the recent passing of Shigeru Mizuki (creator of Gegege no Kitaro, one of the most colloquial Japanese folklore-based franchises), game companies will be more open to those kinds of settings.
Another company I want to see rise from the ashes is Sunsoft. I could probably continue any one of their fighting games with 3D adaptations or create something entirely new.
