New Nintendo All-Stars Crossover that's not Smash
#1
The real appeal of Smash, to me, was always the concept of having all sorts of Nintendo characters, locations, music, and more united under one game. Erm, being a fun game also helped. But it made me realize that Smash doesn't have to be the only game series that is a massive Nintendo crossover. There could be a number of different genres that does this.

What do you guys think? Is there another kind of game you'd like to see Nintendo characters crossover in?

I heard that someone who led development for Mario Kart 8 (can't remember who) said some time after the game's release that he'd like to try implementing a Smash-inspired roster for the next game, if there is one. I think that'd be neat - Nintendo could definitely pull it off.

I'm going to be honest and say that before any preview footage of Sm4sh came about, I thought that they were going to make the fighting system reminiscent of Namco fighting games xD (Tekken, Soul Calibur, etc.). But then I realized that Melee was a blockbuster hit and Sakurai would announce his resignation before changing the formula for Smash Bros :/.

It would be nice to see a crossover RPG that's NOT like Project X Zone. I'm thinking more like the 2D Tales of games (or Valkyrie Profile), in which enemy fights control kind of like that of a fighting game. I honestly have a soft spot for the Subspace Emissary and it would be interesting to see something like it in a 2D RPG format.

I would also like to see and platformer/labyrinth type of crossover like melee's/brawl's adventure mode or metroid. I always wondered how creative Nintendo would get with that.

I can see a lot of things that could be done with metroid's style with crossover characters like Link and Fire Emblem characters. A Mario and Luigi RPG style crossover would be cool too. Teaming up with Link or Samus, Duck Hunt duo, Ness... oh my gosh the team attacks, the possible worlds and enemies. The possible storyline. I could see this being the next big thing.

Whatever the game is, it has to utilize the Amiibo in a big way... Like, I'm thinking "The game itself is free-to-play and you can use your Mii character to explore whatever content is available, but you need the Amiibo to be a specific all-star" big. Probably even "Amiibos also unlock new levels/items/costumes/stages."

For instance in a Kart Racing game, the Mario amiibo could unlock a Mario Circuit from any of the Mario Kart games, plus one of his trademark Karts, and add something to the item boxes... like Fireflower, maybe. The Amiibo is required to play as Mario himself, and instead of the traditional "Character Select Screen" you just get a screen filled with the Mii characters on your system and at the bottom a big "OR SCAN AN AMIIBO!" slogan.

Although I think along those lines, the thing that would most appeal to me is something like Skylanders with a touch of Disney Infinity... Not the half-assed Project Spark "Build Your Own Adventures!" thing that Disney Infinity has going on, and I think controlling the characters might be a little more like Skylanders or any other Dungeon Crawler type brawler game (Marvel Ultimate Alliance...). Scanning Amiibo will permanently unlock items, costumes, armor, etc., but you can also tap them to play as that character or open specific levels. In this case the levels would require the amiibo be scanned for use, but there's just a separate option... I'm not suggesting Level Amiibo, but that in one menu Mario unlocks a Super Mario Bros. level, and in another menu he scans into the game to be used until the player swaps him out.

I fantasize that the "levels" would be compact story adventures... so there might be an over-arching storymode that you can play through with just your Mii, if you want to be a cheapskate, but there are also sidequests and unique levels for each Amiibo. And unlike Disney Infinity, there's no reason why Mega Man can't drop by Princess Peach's Castle to help fend off the oncoming Koopa Kingdom Army.

In the sense of a smaller crossover, I once was batting around the idea in my head of reviving Wrecking Crew, but having Wario and Waluigi being the starring characters. As I went through the idea later on I thought that including the Ice Climbers as secret characters would be interesting, given their use of hammers.

However, if the idea was to encompass as many game series as possible like Smash Bros, I would definitely say it should be done in a Mario Party style format. Have a ton of characters from various game franchises, a bunch of game boards based on various games (They could even have maps that are designed to look like very classic game maps, like a Mario 3 overworld, the original Zelda overworld or a Fire Emblem battle map). The assortment of minigames would bring in concepts and ideas from each game series, and maybe even mimic gameplay from their original series.

For example, picture a minigame which is literally just a dungeon room from the original Legend of Zelda where enemies keep spawning, and your goal is to kill as many as possible. Instead of just Links, the character you chose has a sprite made in Legend of Zelda style (More or less, it would probably be best to go by Mario Maker rules in terms of spriting for the sake of readability) and whoever kills the most enemies wins the round.

Yeah a party game would definitely work well. Also Kriven is right about amiibos. It'd be awesome if there was a game that could use all of them.

A smash game that is not smash could be a very interesting idea and totally a destroyer of friendship
Nintendo games have that side-effect (especially the party ones) so cases of saltiness would be trivial
But yeah, I like the Wrecking Crew idea, it's something I can totally see
I especially like Guycott's idea because of the mix of gameplay styles in the party minigame, mainly the one inspired by Zelda
This could be another good way of nintendo to show characters that didn't make it overseas
If done right, it could be totally awesome

A crossover game needs to showcase the source games' game elements, that's for granted
For example, Mario would be able to jump and Link wouldn't, and Samus would shoot bullets and missiles as her modus operandi
But this is just what I think. Either way it would be a hell of a game

I would say a Dynasty Warriors style game would work, but LoZ has that covered already. It'd be cool if they expanded upon their cross series mario kart thing, but that wouldn't do many series justice. Imagine a Nintendo card game, since that's what they used to do.

Probably not exactly what you have in mind, but: http://kotaku.com/this-november-nintendo...1737750033.

But I agree, Nintendo should try their hand at cards, since they're making billions off of amiibo. And they could definitely do a crossover a la Capcom vs. SNK card games.

Maybe the Amiibo cards should have featured traditional playing elements...

When I first got that little pack of AR Cards with my 3DS, I mistakenly believed an AR playing card game would be coming... I wish it were true. Nintendo Yu-Gi-Oh, kind of, where the battle can unfold with the whole augmented reality thing. Mario actually hops out of his card and bounces off a Pikmin's head, dashes back across the table to stand in his place again. That kind of thing.

Joke's on you, I like that premise.

Oh, maybe a quiz game with Nintendo questions or something. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire style.

If they do this it has to be hosted by the Thwomp who delivers the Super Fun Quirk Quiz in Paper Mario. (I'll also settle for Chuck Quizmo and Vanna T. Actually, I might prefer them.)

Well with Nintendo Land you unfortunately don't get to play as the actual Nintendo characters but Miis dressed as them. But that adds a charm in itself.

I got thinking earlier about the trivia game idea, and decided that I love it! Now, I'm just coming off of my Banjo-Kazooie playthrough and am probably heavily influenced by Gruntilda's Furnace Fun, but what if they combined the quiz show idea with:

(02-04-2016, 08:28 AM)TomGuycott Wrote: However, if the idea was to encompass as many game series as possible like Smash Bros, I would definitely say it should be done in a Mario Party style format. So the premise for the party game is the quiz show (hosted by Chuck Quizmo and Vanna T.), but it isn't a carbon copy of the Mario Party games... Like the Gruntilda quiz show, there are different types of spaces which represent different types of questions: a space with a music note would be a question about music or sounds (recognizing a specific audio clip or answering questions about Nintendo's composers), a space with a photograph on it represents a space involving visuals (identifying an object or character from a work of art, or a game from a screenshot or possibly even as specific as "Which world is being shown here?"), and a space with a question mark would be a general Nintendo question. There would also be spaces with a POW Block (or similar) icon which take the players to various mini-games, some of which are based on and take the style of classic Nintendo moments while others might be retooled Game & Watch games (for instance, I can see Game & Watch Gallery Donkey Kong 3 working as a Vs. game). Before the question is asked or mini-game challenge is issued, the player who landed on the space may wager as many coins as they wish (in the case of mini-games, all players are given the option to wager as all players participate). Getting the answer correct will double the wager, answering incorrectly will take it all. The objective is to locate Vanna T. on the map (just like how in Mario Party you have to locate Tumble or whoever) and purchase something from her... I'll just say "Star" since I haven't thought of an alternative and Mario Party is the base for the formula. Whoever has the most "Stars" at the end of the game is the winner.

Basically I took the two ideas I liked the most and smashed them together and now want to make a fangame.

Also, for the record, I imagine this game as having hand-drawn visuals... Not ones that look like Paper Mario, but more in line with Wario Land Shake It. The only instances of style change or models would be in specific mini-games (for instance, if Target Blast were a mini-game, the style would be like Smash for Wii U... if the mini-game were to race one lap around Mario Circuit, it would look like Mario Kart 64... I guess in a way this combines elements of NES Remix but like... Nintendo Remix).
