Yeah, that looks pretty nice. Here's my version of the edit, which is more or less what you had.

I'm not 100% sold on it though, I'd have to see what his helmet is like in the game again.
Edit: So I looked in-game, and it turns out his helmet is taller than I thought. His face meets a little below the halfway point.

However, I think I know what's wrong with my first sprite; it's the incline of his helmet roundness. My fixes are on the bottom:
