I'm not a big fan of these games either but I don't think all of the appeal is "durrhurr I'm making music!!" but also the fun of scores and feeling skilled with your button pressing/timing. ...Because it's a video game. Of course you do that kind of thing with instruments too but you're not trying to best your high score on an instrument. If you don't have musician friends it's something fun to do together, too.

I mean I play real instruments (not the guitar~~) but I don't play instruments and rock band/guitar hero for the same reason
