It's not because someone's else have done it before that makes it's right again.
This one was a "devamp", which means they 'downgraded' the character into some other older style.
In your case you just picked up one random sprite and used the 'fill/gradient' tool. That's not one edit, it's just a recolor. And it's not that awesomeness either if you ask me.
Anyway the standard thing to do on that edits is to post them at sprite discussion to C+C and only after that they decide to upload. Or not.
