Cheap publicity? That seems to be a bit of an unfair jib at the game, I think. I didn't make it a Mario game so it would cater to a particular audience; I made it a Mario game because that's what I wanted it to be, at the core of it, regardless of the connotations of typical Mario fangames. To be frank, I rarely even pay attention to the fangame scene -- the game has gone through a lot of private production and beta testing with a very limited number of friends, so even if the theme was just an easy way to sell the game it still has little to no connection to the perceptions of fangames outside of this window.

Still, I understand what you are saying about the game having reduced selling power due to it being potentially perceived as "just another Mario game." But can the game not be both successful and a Mario fangame ?

EDIT: And if you must know, I am working on at least one other game project that isn't this. So I guess there's potential for perceived coolness and originality ????? Big Grin

I wasn't saying that's what you intended, but that's all you get out of it. It's fine that you wanted this to be a Mario game, but that doesn't mean it has to use Mario. Take Okami, for example. I strongly suspect the studio behind that made it with the intention of making it with a similar formula to Zelda, but they didn't make it a fangame.

It can be both successful and a Mario game... if you're Nintendo. Fangames are NEVER as successful as original ones.

That's good to know, but really, you could just as easily have TWO. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but people here just don't want to see you waste what looks like a really cool game on yet another Mario fangame.

Well ... maybe my Mario game can pave the way to bursting the bubble of horrible Mario fangames ?????? :p

Some probably do. Personally, I don't have a problem with it having Mario written over it.

Then again, I still have a Zelda fangame project running somewhere B)

Who are we to give advice then? We all know we can't force someone to do what we want. What we give here is feedback. What is done with it is up to the maker.

In my opinion, it is a shame it is a Mario fangame as it doesn't stand out in this over-saturated 'genre'. However, his unique custom art and sound sets it apart. I too think it's better off a custom game rather than a fangame as that is the only thing that keeps it from being truly the maker's.

Again, feedback. It can be processed immediately, be taken in for the future, or ignored altogether. It's what the maker thinks is best.

I appreciate your feedback! Like I said, I would rather have an audience who articulates their immediate, honest reaction as opposed to one who just praises the game (as it has unfortunately been the few other forums I've posted it in).

I noticed you said it doesn't "stand out". While it isn't my exclusive goal to make it so, it would be good to know what sort of thing you feel would make it really, truly unique (I do like broad audience appeal, contrary to what I made it seem like in my earlier post). Anything barring, of course, making it a not-Mario game -- don't get me wrong; I really, truly do appreciate how much you and a few others think this shouldn't be a Mario game, but the fact of the matter is that if I were to make it my own game I would have to deconstruct it to a point where the game will not have the style and structure that it currently does. I am very happy with the direction it has taken, and since the core elements were primarily derived from the pre-existing mechanics of Mario (tweaked, of course, to suit the game's style) retrofitting everything to make an entirely new game, from a developmental perspective, seems very counter-intuitive.

Having said that, it might be wise to just wait to play it until you really give feedback of that caliber! Nonetheless, I really really appreciate the otherwise positive response the video has received. It definitely encourages me to move forward with my next project !!

When I say it doesn't stand out, it's because it sit among thousands of other Mario fangames. What you did art-wise makes it stand out more than an average Mario fangame. The problem is: how are people going to find your game? Looking for a Mario fangame to play, it's very likely yours is overlooked. The title doesn't really help either.

Super Duper Mario sounds like it's just another generic fangame (probably made in a Hello engine, lol). Try a more creative title, though avoid relying on secundary titles, like 'Super Mario Bros. The Legend of the 7 Crystal Mushrooms'. Try to put emphasis on what sets your game apart. You are not obligated to use the word Super either. I'd like to give you suggestions, but I'm dumb for the moment. I'll leave it up to you.

No that sounds good actually. I liked to think the title was never set in stone, but I never put too much thought into anything else to name it (since the plot isn't even all that cohesive at the moment).

I dunno if it would get more attention if it weren't a Mario game, just throwing my two cents in. If anything it would probably invite more negative comparisons. ("This looks just like a thing from Super Mario! Can't you come up with something more original?!") I really don't think you would win no matter which way you went so just do what you want.

It looks fun, though! I already said that, but whatever! It looks fun!

just as a disclaimer, the game does holds on its own as people has said already and its great to see someone who actually put their effort on making something and expanding on the formula, rather than being another lame reharsh of the overused super mario world. i reckon this game does have the potential to be a great, fun platformer with a bit of challenge. wich is what every platformer(or every game out there) should aim for.

but when you name it "super duper mario" you already dumb down your game, and what people might expect out of it. you said you did not put much though into it, but take it as someone who looks at it, and checks the video and the initial though automatically puts in on par with the rest of the library of terrible mario fan games, evene when that was not your intention. the name its rather bad, and it doesnt really help the game in any good way to be honest. check steam's indie section and take a look at how people has presented their games: that should give you an insight at how something that might seem so insignificant is actually teh very first impresion you're giving to your posible players about your work.

this now seems like a rather finished project, and i doubt you'd have any intentions to rework what we have stated. however, i do sincerely hope you'd take this input for your next works.

Hmm weeellll I don't really care for profits (not at the moment anyways), since that's not my driving force when it comes to making a good game ...

Still, you do have a point about the audience element, so I don't really know. It's definitely something I have to think about still.

You know what? I took your guys's advice to heart and, after some very serious retooling of both the HUD and the upgrade system, I've decided to rework the game into something fresh.

I don't know, I kinda liked Mario better than this one, because this new guy here looks out of place. Maybe it's a step on the right direction though, I can't tell.

Maybe if you make him like a cool Mario rip-off, then it could work?

Kinda had the same idea. You could make a character that parodies Mario. You could give the new character a hat.

I have 2 Mario parody characters. One of them is Lou the Custodian (named after Lou Albano), which is a blue cat with a red cap and overalls and a moustache, though a different one than Mario's. Physically, he and Mario are nothing alike, yet he clearly parodies him.
The other is Baron van Oldskool, which looks absolutely nothing like Mario. He even lacks the cap and moustache. He wears a blue, striped shirt and red overalls, but what makes him clearly reference Mario is his stance and ability to shoot bouncing fireballs.
I hope this gives you ideas.

The enviroment is perfect the way it is. I'd keep it like that.
