not enough contrast between lighting and shading, the nose (and this may just be me) I think would look better rounder.
the straps also seem to be going in opposite directions and the buckles barely visible though I think more contrast in the shading would fix that.
bar that the form is rather comical, fun and toony, maybe make the base of the leg to the right a bit thinner to fit in with the other leg.
but overall it is looking pretty good.

Oh what, you sprited the dude from the cover of Phalanx? Awesome. Even if you didn't mean to, I'm going to believe you did, so don't try to argue.

For some reason he looks a bit... poofy? It might be how light the colors are, so I'd echo the "more contrast" comment from Bombshell.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, He is my take on the Phalanx Guy. I have other plans for him, but I'd figure I'd better get a good feel
for him first before I try anything crazy.

I added more contrast, mostly in the darker areas of the palette. I messed with shading in some spots, namely the hat, nose and chest.
I have thinned the banjo neck mostly because i thought it appeared too thick. I changed the pant line on the right leg (his right).

As for the "puffyness", I kinda meant it to be that way. He is supposed to appear "Big-boned", in a cartoony sort of way.

Okay, C&C is appreciated as always!

Control your contrast. Now it has too much contrast. The banjo's face doesn't read very well btw..

its not so much too much contrast as it is too heavy shading. you need to tone down the light red and have a colours between some of your midtones and your shades which will help define form if used properly.

Alright, so here is another pass.

So I changed the palette some. I added a 4th color for both blues and reds, and changed
the overall contrast, although I kind of feel like the extra colors werent needed.
I made the face of the banjo larger, and defined the hand a little more.
I've also added an outline, mostly because I felt like it.

Overall, I'm quite happy with it, and if there are no more major palette issues, I'd like to
move on to other things.

C&C is still appreciated, and welcomed.

take the contrast back to how it was but keep the shade of the overals as a midtone, then try and keep a consistent light source, one thing I see would actually be fairly list is the left of the leg tot he right. your light source is coming from the left and the leg looks like its leaning forwards but its not getting lit?

Alright, once more again I guess.

So, I've tweaked the palette once again. I've changed the shading on the left leg so that the upper portion is
now lit, taking into consideration that he is supposed to read as being hunched down, bent at the knees.

Are there any more critical details that MUST be fixed on this piece, or can I say that this is done? Keep in
mind that the sprites in this thread are for practice, although I still want them as best as I can manage.

here's what I was thinking, fixed the light source and the pallet I did not touch the banjo or the face as the most outstanding features are the overalls and hat.

i've been thinking that your style reminds me of someone, and now i finally got it

this looks so much like some of Phantom K's works


(that's good btw, maybe you should look at them for techniques)

Okay, so i'm taking a break on the Hillbilly, as you may have noticed. I'll continue with
him at a later date.

Right now, I'm trying to come up with a ref character. this is what I have so far.

I'm using the TFR palette because I like it, and perhaps I may attempt to make something
for the project at some point.

As for C&C, I'd like like to point that this is to have a cartoonish feel; the proportions are
supposed to be a bit off. I'd appreciate input as to If this fits with the TFR project limitations
as a whole.

Unless you want him to have a sticky-out rear, I suggest you make it so the wing is further out than the curve of the body. Bringing the curve in, and the wing out a bit should do it.
