Perhaps if the Gong is located apart from the stage itself. What if we made it part of the background image? Just thinking aloud here.
Also:
I just took a moment to make the borders look more grassy. At least in the back of the stage.
EDIT: I also don't like the idea of a pond in front of the arena. Since the waterfalls will be animated and added later on, I think the pond will complicate that process.

-Yeah, the gong should be a part of the background.
-Animating a bunch of water under the level isn't as hard as it seems.
-I think will add the 3 platforms soon.

I am sure that if you Google it for 2 seconds you'd know why water falls exist. Apply that logic to this stage.
P.S. Don't ask questions like this, as they not only NOT add to the game but are overall annoying.

imo the emeralds are going to look distracting and not really fit the "peaceful dojo in the sky" theme, it would probably be better without them. also, it would be hella cool if there were some smaller rocks floating around/below the island, like its crumbling apart but held in time

I think clash meant "where is the water coming from in this stage"
That's what they're working out now (check the last page), with the cave/rocks/water running down the rocks.
Either way, smash bros. has never really made sense. If you wanted to get really logical, why not ask "Why is the platform floating". In the end I suppose it's really just a matter of 'who cares'.

I hate to go a step back, I really do. But here's an image explaining where the water comes from for all you logic fans.
Edit:
I started the waterfall sprites...but I gave up.
Anyone can fix/continue them.

Well I do like the idea. Then again, I liked the old idea also. Then again, again, I enjoy pure black shots of espresso. : |
Joking aside though, I think that the new sketch is taking a step in the wrong direction. This looks like a fantastic design for a water temple stage. But not the classic "Battlefield" stage. My idea of the Battelfiled is a basic stage. Therefor, it is my opinion that it should not be over-indulging.
I say we keep going with what we already have. However, I think we should make a stage (later on of course) inspired by this new design. Like I had suggested above, perhaps a water temple. (Le-gasp!)
EDIT: I would like to point to this opening quote pertaining to the Battlefield formula. "Battlefield, is the type of stage where you can enjoy the most basic of matches." Source: http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/stages/stage01.html

So...The background affects the foreground design and gameplay?
That quote is extremely misleading in this situation.

Hnn, is there really going to be a "Water Reserve" below?
And if the roof leans like it does, the water can't go down equally on both sides

Don't kill me but, I think we should reserve all this "Traditional" looking stuff for Final Destination instead since we all already agreed that FD would be the "abandoned" looking area out of the 2. So later when we continue/re-do that stage we could add the giant gong and such. (Not to mention the gong gets blocked by the highest platform in BF anyway...)
Why? I was thinking of a new concept for battle field. BF could look more like a civilized park. EX: Clean Grass, symmetrical design, buildings in one side of the background, hot air balloons floating around, lights etc.
We could even put a little trashcan on the side, and we don't even have to get rid of the 2 stones Flying Monkey made, they could be somewhere there too. But, you guys can reject this idea and continue what we're doing if you want, its only a suggestion.
Oh and Flying Monkey, do you think you could do the rock underside of the stage? After looking at the BG rocks you made, I think that same design would look great all around!

That actually sounds wonderful! You know that transitional area in Melee between All-Stars stages? I'd love to be able to play on a Battlefield in that park.

I think if we're going with the abandoned looking Final D, that one should have the waterfalls, rocks, and gongs. If we go with what Iceman suggested and make Battlefield look like a park (which is a good suggestion in my opinion, its very original), then I think the waterfalls should be replaced by a fountain in the background of the middle.

How would the fountain fit in that small area? Unless it's a really small one, or you extent the length of the back area?
I think the waterfalls are nice for this stage. You can clearly see that they're man-made because of the water deposits coming out from inside the stage, which fits well with the artificial park idea. And it looks nice in general. I reckon if anything, FD should have that rocky lake you guys were considering adding earlier. Since it's going to look all medieval, I think that'd suit it well.
