Although I rarely played team battle, I enjoy today's update about costume colors being independent from your team. Now you can be awesome colors regardless of your team.

So a little birdie told me that Nintendo of France spilled the beans on Smash bros. Wii U having NFC shown off at E3.

Figurines that have data on them for use in-game, like the skylanders and Disney infinity stuff.

According to Nintendo, no official announcements about any games using NFC have been made. It seems that the french representative misspoke.
It honestly doesn't seem very plausible for Smash Bros. anyways.

Not from a gameplay and design point at the very least. However, toys on stands practically begs to be paired with Smash Brothers, a game which has had storyline directly pertaining to the fact that in the smash bros universe the characters are all stemming from being figurines.
I REALLY hope the concept isn't used for Smash. My heart and my wallet would both be broken. I'd still probably buy it though, I love smash too much.

The major flaw in the idea is that if data from the figurines is required in order to download the content, then whatever content acquired wouldn't be useable in online modes. At the very least that means characters, items, and assist trophies are out. It COULD be used to download inconsequential easter eggs though, such as music or trophies. Or perhaps you could download bonus Event Matches, that might be cool.

It's more likely that the content exists on the discs themselves and are simply unlocked as long as the figure remains in play.
I'm fairly certain Nintendo mentioned a deeper connection between games, but they did not specifically state that it would be the only use for the figures.
