RE: Warm up the Sonic Cycle - Rökkan - 06-09-2011

Impressions of Sonic Retro member Chimpo of Sonic Generations, the demo he played at Sonic Boom.

Quote:Alright. lets get this shit out of the way:

Classic Sonic:

He's heavier than Modern Sonic. A lot heavier. This takes some getting use to but after a while you get a hang of it. Jumping is a lot better than its ever been since the Genesis days. It's not perfect but it's not Sonic Rush either. Bouncing off badniks functions more like a double jump than it did in the original game. No matter how high you bounce on them from you always jump back at a fixed height. I actually like this change because it was used extensively in the level design. Now my second biggest problem is the rolling.

Like I said before, it's completely useless. It shouldn't even be there if that's how its going to work. I tried numerous the demo numerous times to try and in numerous locations. I tried it the Genesis way and the Sonic 4 way (hold forward while rolling) and no matter what, Sonic would eventually slow down. I found a sweet ass steep hill with a loop there and tried rolling. Still nothing. It's worthless and you're better off spin-dash canceling than rolling if you want to go down those hills fast.

My biggest problem with the game is not the controls. It's the scripted events. I'm sure we've all seen numerous videos where Sonic goes down the S Tube, runs over a crumbling floor, hits a yellow spring and is launched back down into the pit to hit another spring. I'm sure a lot of us thought we could hit that but unfortunately its scripted and there is no way out of it. Another event happens at loop before the mountain. A lot of the springs in the game are fixed as well. Jumping on them causes your horizontal control to be locked until a certain point so you can't get that extra distance from the climb up that you normally would. This was very annoying in one section of the level where you hit a yellow spring to get to a swinging platform above you, but just to the right of you there's a breakable platform you can run on and use to get to another spring that will let you get past the platform section. These fixed events are annoying and just take control away along with the enjoyment.

I didn't get to try out Modern Sonic too much but it felt like a much more refined version of Unleashed and that's a good thing.

If they can reduce the number of scripted events and make rolling on its own actually useful then Classic Sonic would be absolutely perfect. It may not be Genesis Perfect but it's damn close and damn well enjoyable. Pre-ordering the shit out of it.

P.S: 3D Mode is awful. Don't try it. The game runs at an awful frame rate and there's input delay. Avoid it at all cost.

I'm... Honestly, sorta disappointed. Not only they didn't fix how rolling worked in Sonic 4, but it's apparently even worse. How the springs work and specially the scripted events sound extremely retarded. It also seems like they understood how the level design of the original Sonic sort of works, but not how the game itself works, so they're like "oh why do we need just one button?" "oh why can't Sonic uncurl? why is the only way to uncurl is to do a rolling jump that makes you lose all of your speed?" "why should the player lose so much time into stopping and then crouching to charge his spindash?" I really hope they fix those annoyances regarding rolling, springs, and the usage of scripted stuff where there's no need for that, or that at least those things won't annoy me as nearly as I imagine they will, because that seems like it will compromise my enjoyment of this game quite some - why making sure Classic Sonic looks exactly like Classic Sonic and have its animations exactly the same when the gameplay can be so far off? :/

RE: Warm up the Sonic Cycle - ZaeTelapo! - 06-13-2011

Even as bad as the rolling sounds, Sonic generations still looks pretty impressive, especially compared to previous installments(rush, sonic advance 2, etc. etc.).

May have to get it. I'm hoping Modern sonic plays just like adventures. I don't know though since I haven't watched much modern footage.

Wonder if classic is still gonna have those oh so annoying all water levels.......

RE: Warm up the Sonic Cycle - Azure-Tranquility - 06-13-2011

I'm not sure what level would be best to represent Sonic Adventure 1... I wanna say Emerald Coast but it's similar to Green Hill Zone.

They'll probaly go with it regardless due to it being the first level, and the level that was a big deal re-launch with that whale chase.

Not really much to choose from either way. Sky Deck will probaly be trumped by an eggman-esque level from another game like Heroes. Speed Highway would just be a City Escape clone. Windy Valley is just GHZ but in the air(Not the exact same but similar, you see). Casinopolis is definitely out of the question.

I suppose if they don't already have an ice level they'll choose Ice Cap, complete with the snowboarding section. Either that or Red Mountain if Lava Reef is not already accounted for.

It seems the issue with selecting a SA1 level is that most of the levels were already similar to the genesis games with very few new variations...

So they'll probaly choose Twinkle Park and call it a day.

RE: Warm up the Sonic Cycle - Garamonde - 06-13-2011

What about Hot Shelter? Or is that similar to something like Flying Battery (I dunno). I liked how Zero crashed through the giant screen. Tongue

Same reasoning as Sky Deck and Final Egg. They take place on the Egg Carrier.

I could see them choosing any of those 3 should it happen that a Egg-related level is not already chosen from another game... but it's a'lot of competition.

The level theme with the least competition is Fire. It's just Lava Reef and Red Mountain if I'm not mistaken.

and I would like either Final Egg(Because of dat music) or Hot Shelter for the Zero gimmick... it'll be better without having to use the sluggish Amy Rose.

Also I apologize if I may be ranting a bit. Sonic is one my favorite game franchises so I'm prone to excess ranting. :p

RE: Warm up the Sonic Cycle - Garamonde - 06-13-2011

I hope they have something like Twinkle Circuit (the music rocked too), since there aren't many mini games in the series.

I don't see Twinkle Park getting in. Red Mountain or Sky Deck are by far the most probable to get in (and they'd be the best choices too), they're the most remarkable levels of the game, disconsidering Speed Highway and Emerald Coast, which I don't think will get in, specially because they already pulled the chasing whale thing with GHZ's giant Chopper.

But this is SEGA we're talking about, so I wouldn't be surprised at shitty choices (like almost every game being represented by the first zone of it)

From Heroes I'd say that it is going to be the Casino zone (Casino Park + Bingo Highway). There is no other game that I see a casino-themed zone getting a rep in this game. Carnival Night? Maybe - but Hydrocity won the poll, and there are no other choices for a water-themed level (Chemical Plant is a speedway level with water, doesn't count), plus Angel Island and Ice Cap are also really popular. Collision Chaos? Unlikely. Casinopolis? pffft.

RE: Warm up the Sonic Cycle - ZaeTelapo! - 06-13-2011

Awww hydrocity. Oh well.

Sounds good in level selection but idk how well their choosing will be.

RE: Warm up the Sonic Cycle - Iceman404 - 06-13-2011

IIRC, I think the polls showed that Hydrocity Zone is even more popular Angel Island and Ice Cap.

RE: Warm up the Sonic Cycle - Vipershark - 06-13-2011

tbh i've never understood why ice cap is so popular
it's always been one of my least favorite levels

i really hope chemical plant gets in and the mystic cave, aquatic ruin, and oil ocean music appear somewhere

RE: Warm up the Sonic Cycle - Cobalt Blue - 06-13-2011

sorry but speed highway is the only stage worth any shit on sonic adventure. is the only stage wich actually managed to create a sense of speed in the entire game.

RE: Warm up the Sonic Cycle - GrooveMan.exe - 06-13-2011

Ice Cap is only popular because he has a KICKIN' RAD snowboard in that opening bit.

I would personally love to see:
Red Mountain (Underground) from SA1
Hang Castle from Heroes
Aquatic Base from 2006 (Which is the stage where you run through a waterfall canyon?)
Levitated Ruin from Secret Rings
Sweet Mountain from Colours

Unleashed is confirmed to be Spagonia, right? I'm okay with that; it's distinct enough in style from City Escape.

idk man judging from your post you seem to think sonic adventure was supposed to be a game of SUPER SONIC SPEEEEEEEEEEEEED

that or you worded it really badly.
