What's to say that using the magic animals will impede our progress? How do you know people won't use them to advance scientific progress? Or understanding? Or even treat them like other animals and dissect/figure out how they are able to do what they do?

Well think about the fact that most Pokemon can almost be used for anything via Flintstone technology. Why make a fire when Charmander can do that for you?
