Mythical Pokemon are Legendaries that aren't available at all in any of the games without a special event (except Deoxys in ORAS). Usually Pokemon that are given to you via an online/hidden event (like Jirachi) or requires you to access a hidden area which is normally not accessible without an event (like Darkrai in Newmoon Island). Basically any Pokemon that you don't need to catch for the game to think you've fully completed the Pokedex.

Generation 2 and 1 probably hold up best in terms of pokemon design but that's only because of my bias with most of those pokemon and any that are related to those in later gens, like generation 4 and whatever megaevolutions came from them in gen 6.
Most of the generations however are pretty much a mixed bag depending on your tastes and personally I feel indifferent to alot of them.
