RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - Lemonray - 06-10-2015

Being serious for this post; This game is a bad idea. In terms of business and in terms of being an actual, playable thing. The fire/ice thing is such an obvious gimmick and from the looks of things, it's less like a gameplay mechanic and more like keys in disguise. So pretty much, "use fire to get through this ice barrier" and the reverse.

They're getting desperate.

RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - NICKtendo DS - 06-10-2015

Time to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles again and deny this happened.

RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - E-Man - 06-10-2015

I only assumed that Sega was just having a little bad luck and some incompetence with their recent games and I thought that they'll try harder next time; however what I just saw yesterday on Gamexplain and what I see in this thread makes me realize that Sega is honestly that dense. :/

RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - Kosheh - 06-10-2015

* Kosheh scratches head

I don't know about you guys, but it doesn't look that bad to me. Now I'm not Big Sega Fanboy but three things:

1) It's being developed by Sanzaru - you know, those guys who made Sly Cooper Thieves in Time :0)
2) The game actually focuses on SPEED and RACING
a) I don't know about you but considering the last two entries in this game were primarily focused on EXPLORING
b) I'd say they're realizing "oops, we fucked up" and they're trying to get back into traditional Sonic gameplay with speedrunnable levels (this is good)
3) I think being a bunch of 20somethings complaining about "sega ruinin our hedgehog HIS ARMS ARE BLUE" is not their intended audience; it's kids. Have you asked kids you haven't brainwashed with "NEW SANIC SUX" about Sonic Boom yet?

Also, notice it's a NINTENDO 3DS TITLE and not a WII U TITLE developed by Big Red Button. Heck they might be looking into developing another Wii U title with a different publisher so cool your panties, this game might be not be as bad as you're all making it out to be. Stop jumping on the "SONIC BOOM? RISE OF LYRIC WAS SHIT!! LOL" bandwagon and try looking at the trailer again and judging the game on its own merits, this time without a freckly, nihilistic IGN intern talking over the trailer with watermarks and pop-ins.

But...isn't that how abilities in games like Metroid and Castlevania work: platform a lot until you unlock this ability which - presto! you can now explode this series of blocks and explore the rest of the game while probably never using this ability for another 50 screens?

That said, this game looks alright - that, and you've gotta consider that the animated series is still going strong, and the series as a whole is probably being considered "successful" due to how the cartoon's doing and not the games. Speaking of which, have you guys seen the cartoon?
It's actually good

tl;dr this game looks good but probably won't pick it up till it goes on sale

Pretty much. Though, in those games they're typically made better use of (Morph ball sections, more combat options, etc), not that they couldn't sometimes have been done better.

Speaking of Chris "Don't call anybody" Chandler, he's aware of Fire and Ice now.

RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - Gors - 06-10-2015

Sonic being with blue arms is the least of the problems honestly.

RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - NICKtendo DS - 06-10-2015

The game can be good, great, amazing even. I just won't take SEGA's word for it. I was willing to look past the designs, but after playing the 3DS demo and looking at the reviews of Rise of Lyric, my faith in Sonic Boom as a game franchise is severely damaged. Fire and Ice sounds like a failure because of that. (Not that it is, mind you)
Nevertheless, I'm curious as to how this game turns out. Maybe it can prove the big red mark on my face, the aftermath of my massive facepalm, unnecessary. Maybe. But I'm still sceptical.

RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - Koh - 06-10-2015

It seems to be a never ending cycle with Sonic now, lol.

1. *Game is released*
2. This game is terrible/this game is mediocre!
3. *next game is announced*
4. Pleeeeease let not not suck
5. Loop back to step 1.

How long can the fans keep this cycle going?

The Sonic Boom cartoon is pretty eh, anyway. It's nothing great, but it isn't horrible either.

RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - Iceman404 - 06-10-2015

Hoooooo no~ The gameplay already looks pretty mediocre/terrible from what was shown. I should know, because with every single bad Sonic game I've been able to pretty much predict how it'll turn out thanks to my extensive knowledge on what a good one looks/plays like alone. The "oh we have to play it first, can't judge on a video" argument reminds me of when people were trying to give Sonic 4's abysmal trailer a chance :V

It's kind of like a modified version of the Sonic cycle, except less people are falling for it these days

RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - Kriven - 06-10-2015

I don't understand why they don't just make a Sonic Universe series of games to utilize their different play mechanics... Sonic Heroes and these new Sonic Boom games are really Chaotix-ish, and those guys are already proven to be capable of handling the title role. So why not make them Chaotix and polish the gameplay? That way when a Sonic game does actually come out that stars Sonic himself, there won't be any confusion as to what type of gameplay it'll have... I guess basically:

Sonic the Hedgehog games - Speedy gameplay, like Sonic Generations (I hate this shit, but whatever, everyone else seems to like it). Could also star in Genesis-style 2D platformers.
Tails games - Uh, remember that one time when Tails did Metroidvania? More of that.
Knuckles games - More in the style of Sonic Adventure and traditional collect-a-thons. Takes heavy notes from Find the Master Emerald without being obnoxious.
Chaotix games - Polish Heroes/Boom.
E-102/Shadow games - Third-person action-oriented platforming shooters.

The characters could crossover in big ways... like Sonic could run into Knuckles while the two of them are on their own adventures, and you get to see that encounter from Knuckles' perspective in his own game. It would be like Sonic Adventure on a larger scale. The games could even be titled "Sonic's Friend... Tails!" just so fans can be assured who the franchise headliner is.

This would also be an opportunity for them to use different villains (for instance, the Chaotix might have to contend with Fang) or to tie up loose-ends, like Knuckles' game dealing with the discovery of the lost Echidna tribe from Sonic Chronicles.

Others:

"Mobius" games - Basically a game that plays like Ultimate Alliance and is used as a video game conduit for the different cartoons and comic versions of Sonic and his supporting cast (so you could mix Princess Sally, Sticks, Sonia Windimire-Hedgehog, and Chris Thorndyke on the same team... and fight Scratch and Grounder).

Sega Battle - Taking influence from Sonic Battle, but becoming the Sega equivalent of Smash Bros.

RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - Omegajak - 06-10-2015

Or we could be focusing on games that work or were actually fun albeit for some not for very long.

RE: General Sonic is Terrible Thread - NICKtendo DS - 06-10-2015

There was a time where multiple characters were done right.
Play as Sonic for a fast-paced, more risky game where speed is the reward for skill. A speed-run character.
Play as Tails for easy exploration and easy gameplay overall, great for beginners.
Play as Knuckles to open alternate paths to new levels mixed with the old. Combined with harder bosses and different skills, he's a good choice for veterans.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles was fun for me to 100% with all 3 characters. It didn't feel repetitive. It felt fresh.
I don't get this thing where you can switch characters mid game. The characters become nothing more than tools, just like the fire & ice gimmick. See a fire icon? Use fire. See a hammer icon? Use Amy. There's hardly a difference. Switching is most likely mandatory anyway. The way I see it is that you play as 1 character dressed as 5.

The Engine of Lost World is awesome giving it to characters with their respective powers could game a lot of depth. The level creation in Sonic Generations was top notch but I've been informed that SEGA found Lost World's stage design easier (I argue it's because they mostly didn't want to think about how LW levels and stages and boards could be applied or played by characters that weren't Sonic.)

I think Sonic 3 and Knuckles formula could be applied with the Variables of Sonic Generations Level Design (those mission levels were actually pretty fun, it's a collect a thon where you do things and if you do it well you're rewarded with an S-Rank and whatever the coruse was for be it music or an item.)

Add in a Chao Garden (cause everyone loves them I honestly don't know why Chaos' stopped being a thing.)

Does anyone else think Sonic Generations level design could be applied to Lost Worlds Engine to make a good Sonic experience?

I'd rather it be the other way around. Lost Worlds felt so sloppy and messy, with the weirdest controls to exist in a Sonic game, and extremely frustrating if you didn't somehow master the pinpoint accuracy needed.

Generations on the other hand was perfect. They totally nailed it - both the modern [Colors] engine felt so refined, SO FAST and SATISFYING

FASTISFYING

I'm totally okay with Sonic on rails, so long as it means they can cram a bajillion good speedy levels into the game because of it

This has to be the cockiest post I've ever read on this forum in all 20 of its iterations and out of all the things it could be about it's over Sonic the Hedgehog.
Congratulations, I'm absolutely furious

(I really hope you just forgot the sarcasm tags in that post, shame Petie hasn't added a button for them yet)
