console/handheld games are great, cuz you can play them...well these days anywhere you want, but many people like me find putting some coins in a machine for a unique gaming experience pretty enticing too. Yep, i'm talking arcade machines, and this is a thread where we can talk about anything related to arcades and coin-op (I guess pachinko and casino games are fine too, cuz obviously so many people love them more than arcade machines).

and just look at how high-tech arcade machines are these days! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NESiCAxLive
I personally believe if they brought back the US arcade market from the dead, business would be booming if they could use something like the digital distribution networks they use in Japan. It's really not much different from what people use for movies, console games, phone apps, etc., so why not bring back arcades?

not to mention playing arcade games with other people is such a blast.
I didn't play a whole lot of arcade games when I was younger, but I do remember playing some of the big name ones. Street Fighter 2, Gauntlet and I believe I also played Dragon's Lair.
I assume this thread also covers old arcade games? Let's go.
My first REAL experience with an arcade arcade machine (not emulator, that'll come later), was when I was on vacation in Panama.
They had a few Neo-Geo's set up, I think it was...Capcom V. SNK 2, some machine I can't remember right off, I remember there being a Time Crisis there, and later on, 2 KOF 2002 setups.
I suck at using an actual stick (first time, after all!), but the experience will probably never be forgotten, arcade machines have a certain...charm to them. Probably those really stylish intro that attract you to them, who knows.
Onto actual emulation, my first actual time playing a fighting game that wasn't smash was in a KOF 1998 tournament on another forum.
It was...foreign, from what I was used to, but time and time again I got back to KOF 1998. it's a really good game.
One of the arcade games I play the most is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. (If you couldn't tell from my avatar, that's Rubber Soul suplexing a DIO.)
Anyways, as far as characters go in that game, DIO will always be the best. No exceptions.
I also enjoy playing the occasional 3rd Strike. Pretty cash fighting game, I should make an effort to learn all of the tech though...
This post is probably a ramble at this point so ima stop, but basically,
tl;dr I love arcade games (and machines)
Arcades seem to be in a tough spot nowadays provided the ease of access to digital entertainment in most avenues of life that just didn't exist when the coin eaters were in high demand.
There's a certain atmosphere to playing arcade games IN an arcade that's lost in home versions. As much as I love playing Crazy Taxi on GameCube, there's nothing quite like actually getting to sit in a booth behind the wheel and have The Offspring blasted at me. (I must admit, though, it's weird hearing the arcade voices - I love the GameCube release voices much more.)

I also have a bizarre fixation on playing Bust-a-Move in any arcade that has it. It's one of the first machines I look for, generally.

I actually got to go to a pretty sweet arcade near me that had a number of hard to find machines (and Crazy Taxi) - there was one of the Mario Kart Arcade GP machines, for example. It's definitely a different Mario Kart experience than I was used to... I just wish they had the F-Zero AX machine. I've always wanted to try that one out.

And they had loads of pinball tables. Lots of 'em. I love playing pinball. They had a pretty cool KISS themed one that actually played their music - the great thing about it was I was chatting with a friend about one of their songs (Detroit Rock City) and lo and behold, it's the first song that comes up on the playlist when I start it up.

The college I used to go to had a small arcade as well, with an interesting selection (they actually had the Simpsons' arcade game, which was cool). One game I wish I could've played more before it got broken was Beastorizer. Yeah, the original Bloody Roar, before the name changes. I actually liked it quite a lot. I wish more games were over-the-top absurd like that one.

I realize emulation for arcade machines is fairly advanced right now and I've looked into it for a couple games, but it's not like getting Link's Awakening to run on my PSP. Something gets lost in translation that just isn't emulatable.
aw poopy, i forgot to add pinball to the poll -.-

but yeah, emulating simple machines like CPS1-CPS3, MVS, etc. is doable on almost any device that's average. But when it comes to more recent machines like Naomi and the Type X series, you need a strong computer at best. IIRC, Type X machines actually run on Windows XP, so to emulate one of their games, you need a super fucking powerful virtual machine on a super fucking powerful PC. (this is like...windows only, no exceptions)

there's nothing better than going to actual arcades though. i never really had the luxury of having one nearby until i moved to the west coast last summer and now there's like a retro-themed barcade right around the corner in like every town/city. i dunno how to describe the experience exactly, but there's just something about it that's unique from any other way to play a game.
Im fucking mad at pachinkos and how konami killed every single franchise i love to be converted to penny guzzlers

Aren't we all?

I remember playing OutRun in a snackbar nearby as well as the Simpsons arcade game in an amusement park called Slagharen when I was a kid. It goes too far back for me to remember the details.

As for now, a friend of mine found a Mario Kart Arcade GP machine. One of these days, we'll give it a try.

I wish I could've tried F-Zero AX. I know the game exists in its entirety on the F-Zero GX disc, but I want to play that game in one of those machines at least once in my life.
I have a Dave and Buster's somewhat near me and that's pretty much the last real vestige of the arcade in America, because often times they'll have actual arcade games in addition to the ticket games.

Mine has an awesome (presumably MAME-based) multi game machine chock full of old Capcom and SNK games, mostly fighters. I can play KoF happily for a while since I don't give a shit about D&B prizes.
TBH, I don't usually play video games at the arcade because emulation and home ports don't cost me a quarter every time (although there is something awesome about using the Super Mario Bros. VS and PlayChoice 10 cabinets). When I go to the arcade, I go to play Skee Ball, pinball, Whacky Gator... The mechanical games. I wish there were more of them.

which is also kinda funny as quite a few new characters in KOF XIV are derived from SNK's many pachinkos, which only like 0.5% of the world knows about. sad, but still pretty funny xP

yeah, those mechanical games are guilty pleasures of mine (even though skee ball is the epitome of why gravity sucks ><). I'd probably separate racing games from the actual video games too, because they each have a unique system of controls.

A retro barcade that I go to has a pair of Mario Kart Arcade GP DX machines (even though it's local. I guess it acquired them from a Dave and Busters after the end of the Nintendo promotion maybe? I should ask next time i'm there). It's quite possibly one of the most polished racing games I've played so far. The first two MKAGP's had pretty finicky controls and weird camera angles imo, but somehow DX is significantly better.

AHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

Serious Question time, when was Konami not a shitlord?
Serious Answer: Never.

Biggest example that you might have ignored: Konami does it's best to have a monopoly on Music Game everywhere. There is more to this than Konami sueing Harmonix and Activision. A thing they have actually done before was take another companies upcoming idea and patented it before they could (The company went bankrupt trying to sue Konami over it). They tried to sue Harmonix and Activision because of the fact that Rock Band and Guitar Hero came out. They might have had a leg to stand on if only they actually advertised Gitadora (Formerly GuitarFreaks and Drummania) here, but they didn't so they lost. Think about it, if they won, we'd barely have any music games here, they would have seized their assets and never done anything with it, much like what they did with Roxor and In The Grove. The only reason why they won against Roxor, because they literally took Dance Dance Revolution Machines and upgraded them to be In The Groove Machines. If Kyle Ward actually bothered to build his own machines, he probably wouldn't have lost. The only reason why In The Grove became a thing because Konami was so mad at us for how we treated Dance Dance Revolution that they stopped making the series for several years. If Koren's Copyright laws weren't how they are, We wouldn't have Pump it Up anymore either (Not because Konami would have Sued over it's Similarities to Dance Dance Revolution, because they would have sued over it's Similarities to Pop'n Stage.) nor would we have EZ2DJ from AmuseWorld, which is Basically a mix of Beatmania and BeatmaniaIIDX and better/more interesting gameplay mechanics.

They've made Pachinko Machines for years, in fact BeatmaniaIIDX has two of them now. You act as if that was new? It's not. Konami isn't a shit company because of their recent issues. Oh no, it goes far deeper, and the fact that their music games still print them money is the only reason why they exist. A lot of people left the Bemani Franchise and have slowly been going since 2007. Akira Yamaoka was the first notible person to leave, but because he never bothered with another music game again, they've been slow on removing his music, instead of removing all of it at once. If you ever played DDR back in the days, you might recognize the name Naoki. He used to oversee the seires, and pick what songs go in the game. He left Konami and made his own Music Game called "CrossXBeat". Konami Responded by removing 90% of his songs in their game seires. When Jun followed him, they removed as many Terra Songs that they could without pissing off the player base. (Terra was a collab between Jun and Naoki)

That being said I love Arcade Music Games. I just wish I could buy out the Bemani Franchise from Konami, it's not like they would ever give us the chance to support that series anyway, so fuck it.
I didn't ignore because I didn't know that to begin with

I always spent my lifetime playing the action games-side of Konami, not the music games (I never bothered with those tbh, I even got into some heated discussions with my ex-girlfriend who is an avid fan of the bemani series. It was all good discussions though)

but now that I know that, I'm 200% MAD at konami holy shit

fucking hell

Yu-Gi-Oh! has been going up in smoke recently on account. I could go into length about things they were doing to the game before this, including the rampant power creep, but this kills the community.
MaxATK, i hope you dropped a mic after writing that post.
