You can't blame them though. If someone capable thinks it's unethical to share the information at this point in time, that's totally okay. Nintendo 3DS and WiiU are Nintendo's the consoles now, and both are struggling in the competition against other systems every day.
If someone were to release a cycle accurate WiiU/3DS/XBone/PS4 emulator right now, great, we'd get to rip stuff, but would it really be worth it?
I mean, emulator development for older consoles is cool for the sake of preservation and the fact that the systems get no commercial releases anymore. Emulator development for current-gen consoles.. not so much. The only people who gain from it are developers not approved by Nintendo, pirates, and us.

There is a difference between ripping assets and making an emulator, though.
I agree that making an emulator at this point in time would be unethical, since the consoles are still in their peak lifespan. However, I don't think a 3ds or Wii U emulator is possible at all right now.
I don't want an emulator though, I'd rather just have the ripped assets.
Yes, but to rip assets, you must know how to crack/bypass the encryption. And if this information becomes public, developing an emulator will be far easier.
True, I can totally sympathize on why they would keep their breakthrough private. Even though the people on this board would only mod for artistic reasons, others would use it for piracy/cheating/etc

Also, I remember seeing a custom build of Dolphin that could open up file branches on Wii U isos (not play them of course), does anyone else know anything more about that?

That one could only extract the update data, not the actual game content.

I mean, emulators are illegal but MILLIONS of people use them, i'm sure of it.

So i find it odd that people worry about that But Nintendo probably won't DO anything about it.

Emulators aren't actually illegal, it's just that Nintendo and other companies don't want anyone copying their content and re-distributing them for to download and play whenever they want for their time bypassing purchases for Nintendo as they made games to make profit/revenue out of these games they sell.
I'm just interested in seeing if:

-Wii U models are actually higher-poly than Wii ones and
-if the music is in a filetype similar to the Wii's BRSTM.
Oh yeah, the models are definitely higher poly by quite a bit. The Wii specs were only slightly better than what you'd see on Gamecube.

As for music formats, I've seen a format called BFSTM, which sounds like a variant of BRSTM to me

Ah, okay. I thought they were Wii similar models but just with fancier shaders, especially in the case of NSMBU. Tongue

If you look at a game like Bayonetta 2 or SSB4, you'd see it's quite obvious that the original Wii would've never been able to handle that many polygons.

Couldn't they just release the games resources, but not the game code or the method. That would satisfy the people who want the data for non-piracy purposes, wouldn't it?

BTW: Can the version of dolphin the can open parts of Wii U isos open DLC (like New Super Luigi U?)
